Coimbra is one the oldest cities in Portugal with a strong identity connected to culture and teaching, being Historically recognized as a university city. This reputation was given to Coimbra due to it´s university wich is one of the oldest European universities and one of the biggest in Portugal. It was founded in the 13th century as Portuguese general studies by D Dinis.

The university itself was initially created in Lisbon alternating between both cities until it was definitely fixed in coimbra in 15th century.

Along with the citiy´s charm and student´s life visit the Joanine Library, an 17th century barroc library that was considered to be one of the most beautiful libraries in the world.
