Berlin in the Cold War. The divided city
For more than 40 years, Berlin was the scene of the Cold War, where the conflict took the form of a wall. The division of the world into major political blocs had an irreversible impact on the German capital. Berlin became two cities, two countries, two systems. And with it, border crossings, ghost stations, escape attempts and espionage. But how and why did it come to the construction of the Wall in 1961? These are just some of the topics we will explore in depth on this tour.

Meeting Point
Alexanderplatz
- The most important square in the former German Democratic Republic will provide the backdrop for the start of our tour and help us to understand what architectural remains from that period still exist today.
Karl-Marx Allee
The avenue along which the Red Army entered Berlin was named Stalin Avenue in the late 1940s. Today it is known as Karl-Marx-Allee and is the city’s finest example of Stalinist architecture.
Tränenpalast - Palace of tears
A former border crossing for citizens between East and West Berlin. At Friedrichstrasse railway station stands the original building, which, despite its transparent and light-filled appearance, was a place of checks, waiting and uncertainty.
Berlin Wall Memorial
This is the best place in Berlin to understand the full extent of the Wall, particularly in terms of its impact on people’s private lives, the division of streets and the creation of tunnels. This site preserves an original double section of the Wall, which will help us understand the complexity of this control system.
