Holocaust Memorial

2,711 solid blocks form one of Berlin’s most iconic memorials. Situated in the city centre and dedicated to the millions of European Jews who were murdered, it is one of the most interesting places for gaining an understanding of Germany’s policies on remembrance over the last 30 years.

Site of Hitler’s bunker

Built 5 metres underground and connected to the former Reich Chancellery, this is the bunker where Hitler took his own life on 30 April 1945. Today, the site has been converted into a car park to prevent it from becoming a place of pilgrimage.

Berlin wall

The Berlin Wall became the physical embodiment of the Cold War from August 1961 onwards. What had been an ideological border became a physical border that stood for 28 years. The section we will see on this tour has remained virtually intact in its original location since the wall came down in 1989. It is a perfect example of how the wall was more than just a physical structure; it was a system of control.

Former crossing point Check Point Charlie

This border crossing was the best-known and most international of those along the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. Following the tank standoff in 1961, it became the epicentre of the Cold War and a historic, political and cinematic setting.

Humboldt University

Humboldt University remains one of Germany’s leading educational institutions today, with 29 Nobel Prize winners to its credit. Together with the Opera House and the State Library, it forms the so-called Frederick Forum, which is dedicated to culture and education.
