It was the most important center of the "Mycenean’’ culture that dominated mainland Greece, the Aegean islands and the shores of Asia Minor during the late Bronze Age era (circa 1600-1100 BC. Atreus, the king of Mycenae, started the Atreid dynasty. His son Agamemnon led the expedition against Troy. The poet Homer in ‘Illliad’ refers clearly to the wealth of the Mycenean leaders and the precious items (golden masks, swords etc) found in the tombs here are the proof of the existence of this civilization. You can see several at the museum at the entrance of the archeological site
Near Mycenae is the Epidaurus archeological site, where is the shrine of Asklepios, the god of medicine protected by Apollo. The shrine developed since the 6th century BC at the main healing center of ancient Greece. The theater of Epidaurus famous for its acoustics built in late 4th century BC is used still today during the summer the most important venue for performing the ancient Greek theatrical plays.
It's the first capital of the Greek independent State in 1830. It has an intense Medieval atmosphere. A walk around the narrow paved streets of the Old Town is like a trip to the past. On top of a hill above Nafplion, there is the strong fortress of Palamidi with an amazing view of the sea.
