Fishermen's Bastion

A fun fact about Fishermen's Bastion is that it was not actually built for defensive purposes, despite its name and fort-like appearance. It was actually constructed as a viewing terrace for tourists and locals to admire the city, and it was named after the medieval guild of fishermen who used to guard this stretch of the city walls during the Middle Ages.

Citadel

The Citadel in Budapest is that it was originally built as a fortress to defend the city from potential invaders. However, it was never actually used for military purposes. Instead, it served as a prison for political prisoners during World War II and the post-war period under the communist government. Today, it is a popular spot for tourists to visit and enjoy the panoramic views of the city.

Saint Stephen's Basilica

The basilica's dome is 96 meters high, making it the tallest building in Budapest at the time of its completion in 1905. It is most famous treasure is the mummified right hand of St. Stephen, the first King of Hungary, which is kept in a glass reliquary. The Church is also famous for its impressive organ, with almost 10,000 pipes, considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe.

The Hungarian Parliament

The biggest Parliament in Europe and even gets the bronze medal in the world.The Hungarian holy crown is also kept here. Some bullet marks still remain on the surrounding building as a memory of Hungary’s revolution against the communists. Its beauty is simply breath-taking. Nothing more to write you have to see it for yourself.

Heroes' Square

Heroes' Square, located at the end of Andrássy Avenue, is a large public square in Budapest and a true architectural and historical gem, showcasing statues of Hungary's most famous leaders and heroes. It even has a statue of Gabriel Archangel on the top, who protected the square from 2 bombs during the WW II.

Freedom Square

It was the site of a massive demonstration in 1956, which was a key moment in Hungary's revolution against Soviet rule. On October 23, 1956, tens of thousands of people gathered in the square to demand freedom and democracy, but the peaceful protest was met with violent suppression by Soviet troops and secret police. The event, known as the Hungarian Revolution, was ultimately unsuccessful, but it remains a symbol of the country's struggle for independence and freedom. Today, a monument in the square honors the memory of those who lost their lives in the revolution.

Andrássy Avenue

Also knnow as the Hunngarian Champs-Élysées. This tree-lined boulevard is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is home to several important landmarks, including the Hungarian State Opera House and the House of Terror Museum.

Dohany Street Synagogue

The largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world is a must see for both its architectural and historic value. Between the 1860s and the 1880s there was a veritable avalanche of Oriental sytle synagogue building in Europe and in the United States as well. The Dohány Street Synagogue was the source of influence when building the Central Synagogue in Manhattan, New York, which is almost  its exact copy.

The Ruin Bars

Another fun fact is that many ruin pubs were established in old buildings that were destroyed during World War II and left abandoned for decades, some of them with bullet holes still visible on the walls. This adds a historical and eerie atmosphere to the places. Ruin pubs are now a popular nightlife destination in Budapest, known for their relaxed atmosphere, cheap drinks, and live music. Some of the most popular ruin pubs include Szimpla Kert, Kuplung, and Fogasház. These pubs are a great way to experience the city's vibrant and alternative culture, as well as to meet locals and travelers from all over the world.
