Hello,
welcome to the elegant and fascinating city of Milan.
Milan in the 21st century is a metropolis that preserves the symbols of the long and illustrious past while displaying its capacity for renewal.
I invite you to visit the Sforza Castle and Milan’s Cathedral, the legendary La Scala theatre museum, and also to have a walk in the charming Brera and Fashion districts.
Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco), in front of the Filarete tower (main entrance to the Castle)
We will visit the courtyards of this majestic castle with its glorious history: from a 14th century fortress to a splendid residence of the Sforza dukes, from a fortified citadel of foreign rulers of Milan and the Napoleonic era to the perfectly restored architectural monument.
Situated just behind the Castle is the Sempione park laid out in the English style. We will admire the majestic Neoclassical Arch of Peace that marks the beginning of the first stretch of the Napoleonic highway to France.
Via Dante is a pedestrian street named after the Florentine poet Dante Alighieri. It is known for its shops, bars and cafés, the Piccolo theater and palazzi, elegant city residences of nobles and wealthy citizens of the 19th century.
We will stop at the Cordusio square, center of the business district of Milan, once occupied by the Roman imperial palace and the location of the ducal court in the Longobard era.
We will also stop at the medieval Mercanti square, that once housed the chief magistrate of the city-state, the municipal authorities and the corporations of merchants.
The Piazza del Duomo is the greatest and most important city square, lined with elegant buildings in various architectural styles.
The Duomo is the largest Gothic building in Italy. It tells a story of faith and art spanning over six centuries.
The Cathedral surprises by the stupendous blossoming of flying buttresses, wealth of sculptural ornamentation, stained-glass windows and its interior decoration.
The early Christian archaeological excavations with remains of an old baptistery can also be seen today.
The roof of Duomo, providing an excellent panorama of Milan, boasts a rich profusion of flying arches, pinnacles, statues and spires, including the main spire with the gilded statue of Our Lady crowning the Renaissance dome.
A monumental arch provides access from the Duomo square to the Vittorio Emanuele gallery, one of Milan’s highlights
with its fashionable boutiques, historic bookshops, restaurants and bars. The gallery features an octagonal space being topped with an imposing glass dome, lavish decoration and marvellous mosaics.
The main archade runs into La Scala square (Piazza alla Scala) which owes its appearance to the work of the famous architect Luca Beltrami.
We will visit the museum of the world-known Teatro alla Scala. Milan’s reputation in the world of music was already solidly established when the
architect Giuseppe Piermarini began the construction of La Scala in 1776.
The museum of La Scala theater presents an excellent collection of paintings, sketches, musical instruments, artistic objects and items connected with this legendary theater.
We will walk from the La Scala square to the Brera district making short stops in nice little squares with their monuments and beautiful palazzi (residences of noblemen) of the 18-19th centuries and in the Fashion district. With its exclusive stores and boutiques designed in the minimalist and high-tech styles, this is the focal point of delux shopping in Milan.
The Brera district is an artists’ neighborhood and a place of bohemian atmosphere, with show-rooms, antique and art shops, fashionable boutiques and numerous restaurants and bars.
The district houses
the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and the Brera Art Gallery both located in Palazzo Brera, the main historical building of the area.
