The duration of the trip from Lisbon to the Shrine of Fatima is about 90 minutes.
You have reached the Cova da Iria. It was here, where the Shrine stands, that “a lady dressed all in white, brighter than the sun (...)” appeared to three children aged between 7 and 10 - Lucia de Jesus, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, on May 13, 1917. Go back in time and imagine this place as a vast plot of land that was used for grazing and cultivation, with only a few fruit trees, holm oaks and carrasqueiras (holm oak sprouts). There were no buildings erected. Think of the Shrine's Prayer Area as a large open-air church.
The Chapel of the Apparitions is the heart of the Shrine. It was the first building to be built in Cova da Iria, in the exact place of the Apparitions, erected by the people in 1919 in response to Our Lady's request “I want to tell you to make a chapel here in my honor, for I am the Lady of the Rosary”.
Our Lady appeared full of light and spoke here to the Little Shepherds in May, June, July, September and October 1917. In August She appeared in another place where you will also visit.
The three Little Shepherds were on May 13 1917 in this place playing at the top of the of Cova de Iria's hillside making a "small wall" and "suddenly saw what seemed to be a flash of lightning". Years later the Basilica was built (between 1928 and 1953).
See the tombs of the three Little Shepherds inside the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. You will have the chance to get close to them.
Attend the 11 o'clock mass. Depending on the day and the season the mass may be celebrated in the Basilica of the Holy Trinity or in the square of the Sanctuary.
In 1973, the intention arose to build a new church in the Sanctuary of Fatima. The first stone was laid in 2004. It was inaugurated on October 12, 2007, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Apparitions. The whole church is white in color, covered with stone from the region: Branco do Mar (White from the Sea). The Basilica has a total of 8,633 seats, including 76 for people with limited mobility. Its construction was paid completely with donations from pilgrims.
Attend the 11 o'clock mass. Depending on the day and the season the mass may be celebrated in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima or in the square of the Sanctuary.

The fourth apparition (August 19, 1917) occurred in this place. Here, Our Lady met with the three Little Shepherds again after they failed to meet on the 13th because they were taken to Ourém for interrogation and prevented from going to Cova de Iria.
In the Spring and Autumn of 1916, the three Little Shepherds were surprised by the presence of the Angel of Peace, in this place.
When he reached them, he said: "Don't be afraid! I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me."
Still in Aljustrel, the village where the three seers were born, lived and from where they guided their flock of sheeps to Cova de Iria, you will visit the house House of Sister Lucia.
After being closed for eight months, the House of Sister Lucia was reopened to the public in July 2024 with the House-Museum concept. The intervention brings some novelties, such as the return of the books to the house and the wall clock that marks the time when Lucia de Jesus was born: seven o'clock in the afternoon!
Over this well, many times did the Little Shepherds sat, talking, playing and praying. Here, on a summer day, the second Apparition of the Angel of Peace took place, in 1916.
When he found them he asked, “What are you doing? Pray, pray a lot. ”
You will visit the house from Saint Francisco and Saint Jacinta, which is open for visits by pilgrims and did not undergo any significant transformation after the Apparitions.
