This is the Seoul Walking Tour: Korea’s Path to Independence (1910–1945), which explores Korea’s struggle for freedom during the Japanese colonial period. It was one of the most difficult periods in Korean history.

Rather than treating independence as a single event, this tour explains it as a long historical process, shaped by imperial pressure, colonial rule, and the participation of ordinary people. Visitors will learn about the courage and sacrifice of independence activists.

09:00 AM

Meeting Point

National Museum of Korean Contemporary History

- Please gather at the plaza in front of the main entrance of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History.

09:10 AM

National Museum of Korean Contemporary History

Here, visitors can learn how independence activists worked internationally and how these efforts contributed to the foundation of the Republic of Korea.

Rather than explaining every exhibit, I focus on key themes that will help guests understand the places we will later visit on foot. This museum sets the foundation for the entire tour.

10:10 AM

Subway transfer

We will take the subway from Gyeongbokgung Station to Dongnimmun Station. It only takes one stop on Line 3.

10:40 AM

Dilkusha

The first stop after the subway is Dilkusha (Palace of a Happy Heart in Hindi), the former home of Albert W. Taylor, an American journalist.

Taylor reported the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919 to the world, helping Koreans gain international support. This place shows that Korea’s struggle for freedom was not only domestic, but also had global connections.

Midway through the walking tour, we take a short break at a cafe near Dilkusha before moving on to the next destination.

11:30 AM

Dongnimmun (Independence Arch) & Seodaemun Independence Park

The arch, built before the Japanese colonial period, reminds us that Korea’s independence was still limited during a time of increasing foreign influence. We will discuss what independence meant in the late 19th century and why symbolic independence was not enough. During colonial rule, it became a symbol of hope, reminding Koreans that independence was a goal worth pursuing, even under oppression.

Seodaemun Independence Park is a layered historical space, which reflects reform movements, colonial rule, liberation, and later commemoration. It helps visitors understand that independence history is not fixed—the way it is remembered has changed over time.

12:00 PM

Seodaemun Prison History Hall

This site shows the human cost of the independence movement. This prison held thousands of independence activists and they were imprisoned, interrogated, and sometimes executed for their efforts.

Visiting the prison allows us to see the harsh realities of colonial rule and the incredible courage of those who fought for independence. Without focusing on graphic details, I explain how the prison functioned as a tool of colonial control.

12:40 PM

A Nearby Cafe

After this intense historical journey, we will end at a nearby cafe, just a short walk from the prison. Here, you can sit, reflect, and discuss what you have seen today over coffee or tea.

We will reflect on Korea’s independence, highlighting the sacrifices, resilience, and courage of its people, and emphasizing that many independence activists were ordinary people, not famous heroes.

The tour naturally comes to an end with a break at the cafe.

About Tour Guide Carl J.

Would you like to walk through the streets of Seoul and experience Korea’s modern history?

Hello, I’m Carl, a government-licensed English tour guide.

I have also completed PhD coursework in Modern Korea–Japan Relations History.

It’s my honor to present the Seoul Modern History Walking Tour, and I look forward to welcoming you.

I’m sure we’ll have a meaningful—and enjoyable—time together.

Seoul is a vibrant city filled with modern shopping districts and impressive skyscrapers, yet it still preserves traditional palaces and historic sites.

It is truly a place where the past and present coexist.

I offer two different types of tours. In one tour, I will show you a different side of the city—one rich with stories of diplomacy, reform, imperial change, and the foreign communities that shaped Seoul from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

In the other tour, I will explain how the Korean people’s aspirations for independence developed during the Japanese colonial period from the early to mid-20th century.

Together, we will explore how Korea navigated modernization and global challenges during a pivotal moment in its history.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I am always committed to providing a thoughtful and satisfying tour experience.

I look forward to meeting you soon and helping you make the most of your precious time in Seoul.
