Seoul Walking Tour: Korea’s Path to Modernity (1876–1910)
This is the Seoul Walking Tour: Korea’s Path to Modernity (1876–1910), which focuses on Seoul’s transformation from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. It was a critical period when Korea faced modernization, imperial pressure, and eventually the loss of sovereignty.
Rather than rushing through many spots, this tour focuses on historical flow and context. Visitors will not only learn what happened, but also why it happened and how it changed Seoul.

Meeting Point
Seoul Museum of History
- Please gather at the plaza in front of the main entrance of the Seoul Museum of History.
Seoul Museum of History
Here, visitors can visually understand how Seoul changed over time—from a Confucian capital of the Joseon Dynasty to a modern city.
Rather than explaining every exhibit, I focus on key themes that will help visitors understand the places we will later visit on foot. This museum sets the foundation for the entire tour.
Jeong-dong Area & King Gojong’s Path
Next, we walk to Jeong-dong, one of the most historically symbolic areas in modern Seoul. Jeong-dong was a center of diplomacy, religion, and reform. Foreign legations, schools, churches, and newspapers were concentrated here.
One especially meaningful route is King Gojong’s Path. This path represents King Gojong’s attempt to survive in a rapidly changing world, surrounded by foreign powers. We can talk about King Gojong’s struggles as Korea faced growing foreign pressure.
Midway through the walking tour, we take a short break at a cafe in Jeong-dong before moving on to the next destination.
Deoksugung Palace
Our main stop is Deoksugung Palace. Unlike other palaces, Deoksugung clearly shows the coexistence of tradition and modernity. Inside the palace grounds, we see traditional Korean buildings next to Western-style architecture.
Rather than listing dates, I encourage visitors to imagine what it meant to rule a country while losing control over its future.
Jeong-dong Observatory
We finish the tour at the Jeong-dong Observatory. From here, visitors can look down at Deoksugung Palace and the surrounding city.
This viewpoint allows us to reflect on how this period shaped modern Seoul and why understanding modern history is essential to understanding Korea today.
The tour naturally comes to an end with a break at the observatory cafe.

Hello, I’m Carl, a government-licensed English tour guide.
I have also completed PhD coursework in Modern Korea–Japan Relations History.
It’s my honor to present the Seoul Modern History Walking Tour, and I look forward to welcoming you.
I’m sure we’ll have a meaningful—and enjoyable—time together.
Seoul is a vibrant city filled with modern shopping districts and impressive skyscrapers, yet it still preserves traditional palaces and historic sites.
It is truly a place where the past and present coexist.
I offer two different types of tours. In one tour, I will show you a different side of the city—one rich with stories of diplomacy, reform, imperial change, and the foreign communities that shaped Seoul from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
In the other tour, I will explain how the Korean people’s aspirations for independence developed during the Japanese colonial period from the early to mid-20th century.
Together, we will explore how Korea navigated modernization and global challenges during a pivotal moment in its history.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
I am always committed to providing a thoughtful and satisfying tour experience.
I look forward to meeting you soon and helping you make the most of your precious time in Seoul.
