Mexico City Tour Reviews

“Catedral to Canvas”

Downtown Mexico City (Centro Historic0) is the cultural heart of the nation, packed with world-famous murals, colonial architecture, We did a walking tour of most of the sites in the center filled with colonial buildings, modern glass buildings, colonial streets. We were astonished to see archaeological dig sites showing temples with pyramid right in the center of the city. adjoining the National palace where the Mexico president lives and other government offices, the post office and the mining palace. We also visited the big cathedral opposite the palace, It used lots of stones feom the Aztec period. The altars were decorated with gold figurines, reminded me somewhat of the big cathedral in Cologne Finally we visited one of the biggest art palaces, The Palace of art filled with mural such top artists as Diego Garcia. Roberto very knowledgeable about murals, interpreted them from a social, political and historical context, something ordinary guides will not do. We were lucky to have him as a guide.

“Chasing the Sun and Moon: A day trip to Teotihucan”

Teotihuacan is an ancient Mesoamerican metropolis located about 48 km northeast of Mexico City, an hours drive from the city. Roberto, our guide is the best person i can find to walk us through these historical and archeologically important sites. He is a serious scholar in History and archeology and is a trove of knowledge on anything related to Mexico, the North and South American continent. And has very affable personality. It was a three hour tour of the Pyramids, built between 100BC-250AD and totally abandoned by 750AD. Two pyramids facing each other, the Sun and Moon pyramids facing each other with a town built in between with some of the architectural features ( water, sewer systems, etc) emulated even today. Roberto gave a multidimensional view of all these places, a cosmological, historical, archaeological, political.it was worth the visit to these ancient sites with a man of such caliber.

“Unearthing the past in Mexico City”

One of the biggest museums in Mexico City, the Anthropology Museum is a class in itself. Pablo, our guide ( Roberto's sub since he missed his flight back to Mexico city) took us through the history Of Mexico city spanning over 700 years of history, starting from an ancient Aztec island settlement into a massive global metropolis. The artifacts from the Aztec empire (CE 1400) through the Spanish rule(1521-19tth century) in almost two floors of the museum was very captivating and Pablo did a great job in walking us through these two eras without loosing our attention. A detailed visit to the museum would take at least two to three days, but Pablo did an excellent job in two hours to wet our interest. He is a good historian, and very pleasant gentleman. Later walked to the nearby Chapultepec Castle, built on top of a hill offering spectacular 360 view of Mexico city. It was built. starting from late 18th century to mid 19th century. We had a new guide Jesus Duran ( sub for Roberto) another good historian, and humorous who took us around the castle and walked us thro the history of the palace. Again, he gave us a thumb nail view of the history without getting into the minuets, enough to peak our interest in the city's history, The castle was constructed by the Spanish for their viceroys, later by the Mexican Emperors and finally by the Mexican president after independence. Jesus was very fluent in English as well as Pablo. In all, we had two good guides with a store of information bound to delight their visitors
