I will lead you on a 2 hour and 30 minutes walking tour through the historic city centre of Madrid. While crossing the Habsbourgh and Bourbons quarters I will take you back to another time in our history. We will pass by the most picturesque places that reflect the key stages in the formation of the city.
During the tour, I going to give you time for a short break in a famous bar so you can have a drink and use the toilets

Meeting Point
Cibeles Roundabout
- Main entrance to Bank of Spain
Four Seasons Hotel
We start at Cibeles Roundabout where there are so many things to see and visit that I am sure I will miss many things, but you will have some ideas.
Telecomunications building
The Telecommunications Palace houses a museum, the original headquarters of the State Postal Service (Correos) and also the headquarters of the municipal government (Madrid Town Hall), which was moved to this location by 2007.
Bank of Spain Headquarters is our meeting point. It was founded by our King Charles III in 1782, but this building was only built between 1884 and 1891.
Cibeles fountain was promoted by the same king, as he planned the renovation of the city to make it look nicer, brighter and more modern: Apolo fountain, Neptune fountain, Botanic Gardens, Museum of Natural Sciences (nowadays the Prado Museum) and the Alcala Gate.
Metropolis building. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was decided to free up traffic in the city centre and connect it to the western districts. The Gran Via project was started with modernist buildings such as the Metropolis.
Puerta del Sol
We continue our walk from the Four Seasons Hotel to Puerta del Sol.
The hotel located at the former Palacio de la Equitativa (1887-1891) was the headquarters of the Spanish Credit Bank, which was involved in several merger processes with other entities. In 2020 the building was reopened as the Four Seasons Hotel, where 5 safes from the old bank are still preserved.
We are passing by the Royal House of the Academy of Arts of San Fernando (1752) and Royal Customs House (1761).
Puerta del Sol square is considered today as the city centre but it was outside the medieval city walls until 1857. A renovation project will use "Palacio de la Real Casa de Correos" as the main point of the square extended like a semicircle or rising sun around it.
Plaza Mayor
Our next stop is Plaza Mayor. On the west side of the Plaza was located the old Christian city wall and here was established a market. It was known as Plaza del Arrabal (suburb square). In the 16th century, King Philip II ordered the construction of the first building in the square and since then until today its appearance has changed to become the most important square in Madrid.
Plaza de la Villa
When leaving the Plaza Mayor, we will see an old food market that has now been converted into a gastronomic market. The first market was opened in 1809, but the current structure was built between 1913 and 1916. Since 2009, the market's renovation has begun to attract tourists thanks to its new approach.
We continue to Plaza de la Villa, where the oldest building in the city is located. In front of the Los Lujanes Tower there is another historical building, the former headquarters of the Madrid City Hall.
Palacio Real
The last stop of the tour is the Eastern Royal Palace. The town of Madrid was founded as a Muslim settlement in the second half of the 9th century under the name of Mayrit at this location. They will create an "al qaçr" (fortress). The fortress was modified by the Christians over the centuries and was lost in a fire on Christmas Eve 1734.
The new king of the Franco-Spanish Bourbon dynasty, Philip V, began a new palace project in 1738 but was never able to use it. It was finished in 1751 and his son Charles III began to use it as an official royal residence. It remains so today but is not used as such, only for official events.

Hi, this is Alberto, a Spanish tour guide with more than 7 years of experience guiding tourists and planning tourist itineraries around the world.
During my professional career, I have taken all kinds of tours integrating history, culture, nature, and gastronomy to get to know the most beautiful and exciting towns and cities in Spain, as well as other places in Europe and the US.
I am organized and very enthusiastic when preparing itineraries and undertaking tourist routes.
I have had the opportunity to accompany foreign tourists from many different parts of the world without language barriers, because I speak Spanish, Portuguese, English, and French.
One of the things I enjoy the most in life is talking about my gastronomic experiences around the world, especially in Spain. Surely you will think that I am exaggerating when I say that there is no better place, but it is true.
I don't drink wine every day, but I am passionate about wine. In each place, I visit I listen carefully to each winemaker to learn and enjoy the wine and the passion they put into the wine-making process.
I hope to be able to convey to you my passion for my country, our gastronomy, customs, nature, historical heritage,... and wine.
