From the second half of the 18th century on, it was the time of changes for Madrid and all of Spain.
The man in power then was Carlos III - known as the "best mayor of Madrid". He spared no effort and money to make Madrid one of the main European metropolises. A number of prominent government buildings and cultural and scientific institutions were established during this time, including what is now known as one of the most famous and beautiful museums in the world, the Prado Museum.
