Let's do a totally surprising walking tour in Porto Downtow focused on its shops, as we are since the beginning a city of merchants! From linens and specialized button stores, where Portuguese fashion designers still buy, to handicraft leather products or knitting threads retail.
We'll find its finest traditional grocer's and confectionery. Goldsmith's, Barber's, bazars, antique ironmongery stores, glamorous cafes, and secret old bookshops to reach the most iconic bookstore worldwide.
Mercado do Bolhão - Rua Fernandes Tomás (North entrance door)
Mercado do Bolhão: Porto's favourite fresh produced market (recently retored). Urban and historical context. I'll be a traveler with you. You'll be a local with me!:-)
Porto's main commercial street. Urban and historical context. Majestic Cafe and the former Palladium Galleries. Clothing and Accessories shops and the History of Photography in Porto.
A wide range of toys, dolls, train models, car miniatures, costumes in a wonderful centennial store. Let's go browsing for shops!
Urban and historical context. Rua das Flores is the most vibrant street ,where some traditional shops remain, meeting artists, musicians and performers in a whole with a great atmosphere.
A very interesting mix between old establisments of trade machinery, hand tools, electric material and contemporary urban culture (cinema, tatoo's, street art).
Time for a coffee break and taste the most delicious bonbons, "cat tongues", wafers and chocolates in town. This traditional confectionery maintains the original shapes and flavors since 1933.
Used to be the 2nd commercial street in Porto. Can say there's a nostalgic atmosphere over this street, but at the same time it's so contemporary as it opens to the City's Contemporary Art District.
So pleasant Square of Lions and in front a magnificent Art Deco style facade, with a feathered peacock. Centennial warehouse of household items. University students district, close to nightclubs and terraces area.
Built in 1906, this is the most famous bookstore worldwide.. Winner of the 2023 World Ranking for the Most Beautiful Bookstores in the World, by 1000 Libraries. Skip-the-line ticket included and a guided visit by me, who worked there as a bookseller for 5 years!:-)
