09:30 AM

Under the Arch of Rua Augusta

We will be waiting for you under the Rua Augusta Arch, or in case you are staying in Lisbon´s old-town, we might be able to meet you at your Hotel or AirBnB.

Baixa Pombalina

The downtown of Lisbon, called “Baixa Pombalina” area is the heart of Lisbon and was completely rebuilt after the devastating 1755 earthquake. Covering an area of about 255 hectares, it contains magnificent squares, which are interconnected by straight avenues filled with grand 18th century architecture.

Olissippo, the Roman Lisbon

Explore the Roman Theatre that was built in the first century, in the time of the Roman emperor Augustus. It was rebuilt in Emperor Nero´s time, and during the reign of Constantine it was partially dismantled.

Abandoned in the fourth century, it was only discovered 1798, after the 1755 earthquake, while Lisbon was being rebuild.

Saint Jorge Castle

View the S. Jorge Castle, located in the old medieval citadel, that was inhabited by the Moors who fortified it for their defence. When D. Afonso Henriques (Portugal´s founding King), took the castle in 1147, after besieging it for 3 months, expelled the Muslims and opened the castle doors to Christianity.

Miradouro Santa Luzia

Take in the amazing Saint Luzia Viewpoint. It has one of the most beautiful views over Alfama and the Tagus River, having on its south wall two tile panels, one from the Commerce Square before the earthquake and one with Christians conquering the São Jorge Castle.

Alfama Neighberhoud

Walk up (and down) Alfama, the oldest and one of the most typical neighborhoods of Lisbon. Its name derives from the Moorish Al-Hamma, meaning baths or fountains.

Lisbon´s Sé Cathedral

The oldest church of Lisbon began its construction in the second half of the twelfth century, after the conquest of the city from the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques. Then construction of the cathedral was apparently done in the place of the old mosque of Lisbon.

Bairro Alto

"Climb" to this part of the city to get an idea of what you are able to do in Lisbon for the rest of your stay.

Santa Justa Lift

From the top of this neo-Gothic structure (built 1902) you can have another view over Lisbon and the Rossio Square.

The engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard was responsible for the design, contrary to the popular belief that there is a connection to Gustave Eiffel.

It is well known that Ponsard applied to this lift some of the techniques and materials already used in France.

Rossio Square

Discover the "darker" part of this square in Lisbon´s history...

Miradouro São Pedro de Alcantara

From here, you have one of the nicest views over Lisbon and specially to the S. Jorge Castle.

Here is also the point where the tour ends.

Ending Point

Under the Arch of Rua Augusta

Reviews

Favourite tour!

I have been in Portugal for a month, and this is the favourite thing I've done. No words can describe how beautiful the views are in Arrábida. The small towns we drove through were so charming. You will not regret booking this tour with João.

And hello again, dear Elaine, Thank you so very much for the reviews! Glad that we could make a difference in your stay here in Portugal. Nature has always a beauty of it's own and makes our job easier... ;-) Hope to have you back soon! Warmest Regards, Joao Dickmann

Óbidos and Mafra

This is my second tour with João and I have no regrets. Óbidos is a very photogenic town, and it's amazing to see the well-preserved Moorish walls that have been around since the 8th Century. The palace at Mafra is massive, and I am grateful that João was there to guide me through all the rooms. To be honest, I preferred this tour to Sintra, as it felt less “touristy”.

Joao D.

Hello again, dear Elaine, Thank you very much for your trust and friendship. Óbidos & Mafra are "special" locations to visit, as it shows different places around Lisbon that are not that much visited. Thank you for all. Regards, Joao Dickmann

Rainy Sintra Tour

Although the severe rains limited some of our activities, João was an excellent guide who was very knowledgeable and provided great context for all the facts given. It was especially nice to hear about his personal experience growing up in Cascais, and how the area has changed over the years.

Thank you very much for your feedback. It is always very important for us to hear what our travellers have to say. And yes, sadly you were here in one of the rainiest seasons for decades in Portugal. But we still managed to make something out of the day... ;-) Warmest Regards, Joao Dickmann
