Our tour seeks to bring a historical and cultural knowledge of our University and the city of Coimbra. For this, we have studies in the area of history and museology, having even worked for some years directly for the institution. So on this tour you can expect a lot of history, but above all a great energy. We appreciate that our historical knowledge is passed on through a good time with our tourists, creating a unique experience.
The Main Gate of The University (Porta Férra)
The meeting point will be in front of the University's main gate and here we will make a introdution about our tour.
What we call the University today, was in the past the first royal palace of the kingdom of Portugal. It is here, therefore, where the history of the Portuguese nation mixes with the history of the first and most important educational institution in Portugal.
The Joanina Library needs no introduction, this is the highlight of our tour. It is here that we observe the high point of the relationship between art and education, through our walls covered in gold and with historical books from several centuries ago.
The chapel of São Miguel is a 16th century building, this is where the ecclesiastical part of our institution was located and its high point today takes place on the days that have weddings of former students of the University.
Sé Nova is a 16th century cathedral built by the Jesuits and after the 18th century it began to have classrooms for Physics and Natural History around it.
The Sé Velha is a 12th century cathedral and is considered one of the most important cathedrals in Portugal, here was the place where the second king of Portugal was crowned, Dom Sancho I.
The Almedina Arch is today one of the last remaining parts of Coimbra's city wall and is the main gateway to the old city.
The Church of Santa Cruz was built in the 12th century and was a monastery for many centuries, today it is a national pantheon. This is where the tour ends and the last explanations about the lower part of the city take place, such as Sofia St. and Iniquisition Plaza.
