Meeting Point
Omicho Market - Mister Donut Sign
- We’ll meet at the main entrance of Omicho Market at 9:00 AM. We will meet at the front entrance of "Mister Donut". The day begins with the vibrant sights and scents of Kanazawa’s kitchen. I’ll introduce the tour flow and point out some of the best breakfast bites—like sushi, grilled skewers, or croquettes—for those who’d like a quick taste. You’ll also get tips on where to return for lunch after the tour. From here, we’ll slip into the quieter backstreets and begin our journey into Kanazawa’s hidden geisha world.
Walk to Kazuemachi via Samurai Garden
From Omicho, we’ll take a quiet backstreet route toward Kazuemachi, passing a former samurai residence and its garden. This peaceful stroll sets the tone for the day as we explore Kanazawa’s layered past. Along the way, we’ll discuss the Edo-period class system, the decline of the samurai, and how rivers and moats shaped the city’s defenses and daily life. It’s a gentle walk that opens the door to Kanazawa’s hidden stories and elegant past.
Kazuemachi Geisha District – Hidden Elegance
Tucked along the Asano River, Kazuemachi is one of Kanazawa’s lesser-known geisha districts—quiet, refined, and full of hidden charm. As we wander its narrow lanes, you’ll hear stories of the geisha who once performed here and how this area differs from the more visited Higashi Chaya. With its riverside setting and preserved wooden facades, Kazuemachi offers a glimpse into the elegant, everyday world of Edo-period entertainers.
Riverside Walk to Higashi Chaya
As we cross the scenic Asano River, we’ll pause for a photo and take in the view of Higashi Chaya from a quieter angle. Our riverside path leads past a historic shamisen shop and the peaceful Jukyoji Temple, where we’ll explore the story of Kanazawa’s rice riots and their impact on local society. This stretch offers a reflective moment—perfect for questions, snapshots, and soaking in the atmosphere before we step into the heart of the geisha district.
Hiromi Square & Geisha District Origins
At Hiromi Square, we’ll pause to uncover how geisha districts were carefully regulated during the Edo period. This open space marks the transition into Higashi Chaya, once a designated entertainment zone where art, music, and refined hospitality flourished under strict social codes. As we begin walking up the main street, you’ll start to feel the shift—from quiet backstreets to the polished elegance of Kanazawa’s most famous geisha district.
Shima Geisha House (or Geisha Art Museum)
Inside the Shima Geisha House (or Geisha Art Museum), we’ll step into the refined world of traditional entertainment. As we explore the tatami rooms, seasonal décor, and antique instruments, you’ll learn how geisha trained in music, dance, and etiquette. These preserved interiors offer a rare glimpse into the artistry and discipline behind the performances that once captivated Kanazawa’s elite. It’s a quiet, elegant moment in the heart of the district.
Artisan Alley – Gold, Sake & Craft
We’ll step into a gold leaf shop to admire a building entirely covered in shimmering gold and learn how Kanazawa became Japan’s gold leaf capital. Afterward, we’ll stroll past a series of artisan shops—featuring sake, traditional sweets, gluten confections, and beauty cosmetics. I’ll introduce each one, and guests are welcome to pop in and browse at their leisure before we continue.
Utasu Shrine – Shinto & Enshrinement
At Utasu Shrine, we’ll explore the foundations of Shinto—the native religion of Japan. I’ll introduce key features like the torii gate, koma inu guardians, and the purification ritual at the temizuya. We’ll talk about prayer customs, the concept of enshrinement, and the story of the deity honored here. This stop offers a thoughtful look at how tradition, belief, and community come together in everyday life
Final Stroll & Flexible Farewell
As we make our final stroll through the district, we’ll pass a beloved ginger sweet shop—known for its seasonal flavors—and the geisha practice house, where music and tradition still echo through the walls. This gentle wrap-up offers time for final stories, questions, or photos. Guests are welcome to continue exploring Higashi Chaya’s cafes, craft shops, and restaurants at their own pace, or join me for a relaxed 15-minute walk back to Omicho Market to complete the loop.
Ending Point

Kanazawa Kenrokuen garden & Kanazawa castle park tour
Kenrokuen garden and Kanazawa castle park are really popular places for tourists in Kanazawa area, Hokuriku region. Both places have lots of attractions, so I think guests should enjoy taking enough time to go around there. I have seen many cases that tourists go around both places without enough time, so I made this see around with enough time. Each spots have meanings, so I will guide you about the meanings as best I can.
