Kanmon Strait Highlights Walk: Markets, Shrines & Mojiko Retro

Welcome to Kanmon! This is a tour to walk along Kanmon Strait and visit Highlights like Karato Market, Akama Shrine, Pederstrian Tunnel to cross the prefecture border, and Mojiko Retro area include Japan Heritage sites.
We take about 2.5hours to walk from Karato to Mojiko Retro and a ferry to back to Karato at the end. We can also take public transportation if you prefer. Ferry ticket included, No Lunch.

Meeting Point
Shimonoseki Grand Hotel
- Find me in the lobby when you enter. I will have your name plate or Walking Tour board. We will reconfirm the itinerary and arrange if you have any request. After we leave the hotel: Visit Former British Consulate, Karato Market, Akama Shrine
Akama Shrine
This is the symbol shrine of Shimonoseki and enshrines the 51st Emperor Antoku, who died at the age of 8.
Pedestrian Tunnel
One of ways to cross Kanmon Strait and underwater tunnel. about 20~25min walk and pass the prefecture border between Yamaguchi and Fukuoka. This is the only spot in Japan!
Mekari Shrine
The most Northest Shrine in Kyushu Island. It has a history from 3rd century.
Mojiko Retro
Like a small theme park of the early 1900's, include Japan Heritage sites and souvenir shops. Visit the oldest train station "MOJIKO" and Mitsui Club where Einstein stayed when he came to Japan in 1923.
Take a ferry back to Karato

About Tour Guide Rie M.
I am Rie. I have been a guide for 3 years, a wine bar owner, and a horn player etc. I had lived in US, Guam and Switzerland and have been living in Shimonoseki since 2017. I love traveling, drinking and eating local foods, photographying, and meeting people and more! I started taking a lesson of Japanese Traditional dance because I am into Kabuki Theatre and Kimono. City Shimonoseki is very unique and still a hidden place in Japan from my perspective. Pedestrian tunnel under Kanmon strait was picked on the TV program "Great Railway Journey" by BBC in 2026, and I was a part of the program for 30 sec :) It is my pleasure to show you around and make your visit personal and memorable!!
