Monestry of Batalha
The victory of the armies of D. João I over the troops of Castile played a fundamental role in maintaining the independence of the Portuguese kingdom. According to the mysticism of the time, the king made a vow to Our Lady who determined the invocation of the temple, since the battle took place on the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin. Construction work began in 1388.
The soft, warm-toned stone makes the Batalha Monastery not only a unique monument in the flamboyant Gothic style, but also a fundamental landmark in the history of the kingdom of Portugal – a true “place of memory”, in golden colour, at a time when its independence was reaffirmed by the combined action of two men: D. João I, king of Portugal, and D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, constable of the kingdom.
Its almost crystalline and mineral form, characteristic of late Gothic buildings, is the result of the wise management of one of the greatest architectural workshops in Portugal, spanning several generations, from its founding master, Afonso Domingues (1388-1402), through the brilliant Huguet (1402-1438), and culminating in the capricious “Manueline style” of Mateus Fernandes (at the beginning of the 16th century). The Founder’s Chapel and the famous “Imperfect Chapels” were intended as pantheons for the kings and princes of the Avis Dynasty. It reveals something else in its symbolism, marked by the scholasticism of the Dominican friars: it represents the Celestial City.

Nazare Big Wave Santuary
The Nazaré Canyon is an undersea canyon just off the coast of Nazaré (Portugal), in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. It has a maximum depth of at least 5,000 metres (16,000 ft) and is about 230 kilometres long.
The Nazaré Canyon is the reason why the waves are so big and so high breaking. This makes Nazaré a hotspot for big wave surfing.
Although Praia do Norte catches the world attention, Nazaré has not only giant and powerful waves, but also spots and waves accessible to all athletes. And you can also swim in its waters.
Time of the year for the biggest waves in Nazaré
The big wave season begins in November and ends in February. Since 2011, the Big Wave Challenge in the iconic Praia do Norte has caught the eye of the world and Nazaré became a world-famous surf destination. But only for the brave!
Garrett McNamara
Since Garrett was a young boy, 1-year old, he has been on the search for the Rush. Lucky for him and the rest of the world he found his calling in life… the Ocean.
For the last 25 years Garrett has been on the search to accomplish the unthinkable and ride the unknown. He is known for pushing the limits and going deep.
He is the first and only in history to ride tsunami waves created from calving glaciers, the first to be towed into a big wave by helicopter, and the most decorated tow surfer to date. He is a citizen of the world constantly exploring, sharing experiences and being inspired along the way!
Obidos Village
The medieval town of Óbidos is one of the most characteristic and well-preserved in Portugal.
Sufficiently close to the capital and situated on a high point near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos had a strategic importance in the territory. Already occupied before the Romans arrived in the Iberian Peninsula, the town became more prosperous from the moment it was chosen by the royal family. Ever since King D. Dinis offered it to his wife D. Isabel, in the 13th century, it belonged to the House of Queens who, over the course of several dynasties, gradually benefited and enriched it. This is one of the main reasons why there are so many churches in this small town.
Within the walls, we find a well-preserved castle and a labyrinth of streets and white houses that enchant those who stroll through them. Among Manueline porticos, flower-filled windows and small squares, there are several reasons to visit, good examples of religious and civil architecture from the town's golden age.

Hi! I'm Francisco :) I´m a local guide, born and raised in sintra. I know sintra many years before the turism started, before 1996, it was my playground and a place for locals. I heard many legends about mysticism, secrets and sintra stories, told by local elders. Later I joined a group in sintra and deepened my historical knowledge and the Portuguese spiritual tradition linked to the Templars and knights of order of christ. The passion for history comes from my father, a history teacher and a monarch. Now, I'm responsible for sharing my passion and knowledge in a immersing guided view of Sintra, Quinta-da-Regaleira, and Pena Palace, and the keeper of the first "door" to sintra history culture and spirituality.

“Excellent Day with Francisco”
We had a wonderful 8 hour tour of four palaces in Sintra. Firstly, even though we had a rental car, this is not a tour that we could have done on our own. The maze of streets and few hidden parking spots would have likely meant that we would have has to miss sites. Also, gps doesn’t work on the volcanic mountain. Second, he has an excellent knowledge of the sites, and of Portuguese and world history. He also is an excellent story teller, and a great guy. Francisco picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel, which was helpful. Moreover, he grew up in Sintra, and now lives nearby so he knows a lot of people, and picked an excellent, simple local restaurant for lunch. If we did it again, would spend an extra night in Sintra and do a second day of touring with him. Highly recommend a tour with him.
