Narita and Sawara: Day Trip to Nice Historic Cities from Tokyo
Are you looking for more unique options that many foreign tourists haven’t found yet?
Chiba is right next to Tokyo, and has many charming historic cities. Narita is an old, famous temple town. Its long approach has about 150 shops and restaurants. Sawara is a quiet merchants' town from the premodern times. You can enjoy a small canal boat ride navigated by a traditional-looking local.
Away from the packed streets in Tokyo, why don't we feel the good, peaceful vibes of these old cities?

Meeting Point
JR Narita Station (Primary meeting point)
- (Alternative meeting point Keisei Narita Station / Narita International Airport) It's about a 1-hour train ride from the center of Tokyo. You can also meet me at the airport. Either way, I'll make it the most convenient for you! Just let me know the meeting point of your choice. The meeting time can slightly change according to where we meet, as there are fewer train services outside Tokyo (almost having only ONE train in ONE hour).
Naritasan Shinshoji Temple
Visit the very spacious temple with many important temple buildings. Then, stroll around a huge Japanese-style garden with a waterfall, streams and small ponds surrounded by good nature.
If you are interested in seeing the special Goma fire ceremony held at the main hall several times a day, please kindly ask me so that we can set the perfect timeschedule.
Sawara
After a 30-minute train travel, we will go inside of the main street of Sawara. See all the beautiful old houses from the premodern times.
We can also enjoy a peaceful boat ride on a small canal.
Then, let's enjoy lunch at a cozy cafe or a restaurant. Before leaving, don't foreget to pick up your souveniors at nice local shops.

About Tour Guide Kanae W.
I love Tokyo! It's an incredibly fun city to walk around. I really know how to do it, too.
I'm proud to be a government-licensed tour guide and Tokyo local with a great passion for sharing the wonders of the city and Japan. As I have spent more than 25 years of my life in the Tokyo area, I'm quite familiar with many of the attractions the city has to offer.
This city never stops surprising people, including me, a long-time local, with its blend of traditional and modern elements. I hope you will feel that excitement as well.
Moreover, with a great deal of knowledge about Japan and a good sense of humor, our journey should be full of interesting and enjoyable stories and conversations. As a working mother of a young boy, for example, I am quite familiar with current situations and traditional events related to families in Japan today.
Please let me know if you are curious about anything during your stay in Tokyo. I would be happy to help. I am very happy and excited to meet you soon.
Thank you. Arigatou gozaimasu!
