Toshogu Shrine (Nikko)
Toshogu Shrine is Nikko’s most famous landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s the lavishly decorated resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The shrine complex features beautiful wood carvings, gold leaf decorations, and famous symbols like the “Three Wise Monkeys” (“See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil”) and the Sleeping Cat. Surrounded by cedar trees, Toshogu offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Kanman-ga-fuchi Jizo (Nikko)
Kanman-ga-fuchi is a peaceful riverside area in Nikko, famous for its line of about 70 Jizo statues, known as the “Bake Jizo” or “Ghost Jizo.” Each statue looks slightly different, and their red hats and bibs are said to protect travelers and children. The quiet walking path along the river, surrounded by moss-covered stones and forest, offers a calm and spiritual atmosphere—perfect for relaxing and enjoying the natural beauty of Nikko.
Irohazaka Winding Road (Nikko)
Irohazaka is a famous mountain road connecting central Nikko with Lake Chuzenji and the Oku-Nikko area. The road has 48 sharp curves, each once named after a letter of the old Japanese alphabet “Iroha.” It offers stunning views of the valley and surrounding mountains, especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn vibrant red and gold. Driving or riding along Irohazaka is an unforgettable experience and a highlight of any Nikko visit.
Kegon Falls (Nikko)
Kegon Falls is one of Japan’s most beautiful waterfalls and a must-see spot in Nikko. The waterfall drops 97 meters from Lake Chuzenji into a deep valley, surrounded by lush forest. You can view it from the upper platform or take an elevator down to the lower observation deck for a closer look. The scenery changes beautifully with each season—especially stunning during autumn foliage and winter ice formations
Lunch (near Kegon Falls)
After visiting Kegon Falls, we’ll enjoy lunch at a nearby local restaurant. You can taste delicious Japanese dishes such as soba (buckwheat noodles), yuba (tofu skin), and seasonal specialties from the Nikko area. The restaurants around Lake Chuzenji offer beautiful views of the lake and mountains, making it a relaxing break during the tour.
Lake Chuzenji (Nikko)
Lake Chuzenji is a scenic mountain lake located at the foot of Mount Nantai. Formed over 20,000 years ago by volcanic activity, the lake is surrounded by majestic mountains, forests, and hiking trails. Visitors can enjoy relaxing walks along the shore, boat rides, or simply take in the beautiful reflections of the mountains on the water. The area is especially stunning in autumn when the leaves turn vibrant red and gold.
Senjogahara Marshland (Nikko)
Senjogahara is a vast highland marshland located in the Nikko National Park. It features wooden walking trails that allow visitors to explore its unique ecosystem of grasses, flowers, and wetlands without disturbing nature. The area offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and is particularly beautiful in summer for wildflowers and autumn for colorful foliage. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy Nikko’s natural beauty and fresh mountain air.
