Hayama is a seaside town south of Tokyo and Yokohama, best known for Japan’s oldest Imperial Villa. This town offers a blend of natural beauty and refined culture. On this half-day tour, you’ll visit elegant museums, a traditional garden, and enjoy dining in a villa-style restaurant. Unlike nearby Kamakura, Hayama remains quiet and uncrowded, making your experience authentic, relaxing, and truly special.
Of course, you can easily plan this tour before or after visiting Kamakura!
This itinerary can be customized to meet your needs and preferences. Send me a message with your requests!
Meeting Point
Zushi Station
- From there, we can take a taxi or bus, or I can drive you to the Hayama area. Yokosuka Station, or Kamakura Area is also an option, (Flexible: Your Hotel or Preferred Location) Note: I'm based on the Miura Peninsula, so meeting at a nearby station allows us to start the tour at a time that suits you best. However, if the timing works, I'm also happy to meet you at your hotel or preferred location in Tokyo or Yokohama. Just send me a message in advance so we can coordinate the details.
Hayama Shiosai Park
Once part of the Imperial Villa gardens, this seaside park is a peaceful place with traditional landscaping, a pond, and views of Mt. Fuji on clear days. It’s an elegant setting that reflects the quiet beauty cherished by the Imperial Family.
There is also a small waterfall, a stream and pond fed by spring water, and colorful koi swimming gracefully, making the scene feel like a Japanese painting. Next to the park stands an Imperial villa, a retreat where the Imperial Family occasionally stays. The area is calm and beautiful, and local people live here with care, preserving the tranquil atmosphere. This way of life feels very “Japanese.”
Yamaguchi Hōshun Memorial Museum
Discover the works and former residence of Yamaguchi Hōshun, a renowned 20th-century Japanese painter. He first gained attention in pre-war Japan for mastering yamato-e, a traditional painting style, but he was also a pioneer who kept exploring new forms. By taking in elements of Western painting, he created works that blended tradition with modern expression throughout his life.
The museum, renovated from his post-war home in Hayama, is surrounded by a beautiful garden where you can enjoy seasonal plants. The house still preserves features of a traditional Japanese residence, so not only the paintings but also the building and the garden are well worth seeing.
Lunch at a Local Cultural Restaurant
In Hayama, you’ll find many unique restaurants loved by locals. Here, you can enjoy a refined meal in a serene setting. There are restaurants converted from old Japanese houses, a traditional ryotei that has continued for over 300 years, and simple eateries serving fresh seafood, etc.
However, Hayama is not a highly commercial tourist spot. It’s a small town where nature and culture blend, and it is quietly loved by a limited number of people. Because of this, the number of restaurants is limited. I’d like to ask about your preferences in advance and make reservations for you. So please let me know your lunch preferences and a good time for the booking by message beforehand.
Driving along the Seaside
After enjoying the atmosphere of Hayama, let’s head to the nearest station—Zushi Station, Yokosuka Station, or to the Kamakura area. The choice depends on your schedule and plans.
Ending Point
Zushi Station (or Yokosuka Station / Kamakura Area)

Hello! I’m a local guide based in the Miura Peninsula, a beautiful coastal area just south of Tokyo. I’ve been living here for nearly 10 years, surrounded by the sea, fields, and a peaceful way of life.
The Miura Peninsula has many unique towns. Kamakura is an old capital where Japan’s first samurai government began. Yokosuka has long been a base for the Japanese Navy, and today it is a special mix of American and Japanese naval cultures. Misaki & Jogashima (Miura City) is a quiet fishing and farming town, very different from busy Tokyo. Hayama is a beautiful town with a summer house of the Japanese Imperial Family.
Through my tours, I want to show not only the famous places but also everyday life in Japan—especially how people live in small towns outside the big city. I hope you can feel the calm, kindness, and beauty of local life.
I’d love to show you the slower, more local side of Japan.
Let’s explore together!

Ellen, I really enjoyed discovering Tokyo’s hidden charms with you the other day. Thank you for writing a review—it was very encouraging! If you have any questions about the places we visited, feel free to contact me anytime! I’m looking forward to seeing you again.

“Relaxing day with Nahomi”
Hi, we're looking for a good local Japanese tour of areas outside of Tokyo that normally tourists would not go to. Nahomi contacted us before the tour started and wanted to know what we wanted to see, eat and do tofay. She was very flexible and adjusted our itinerary to see, eat and do what we preferred. Because my wife couldn't walk fast because of a back surgery, our pace was a little bit slower. Our tour was suppose to be 5 hours but ended up to be 6 1/2 hours. We highly recommend using Nahomi and we plan to take her Kamakura tour during our next visit to Japan. Thank you, Nahomi!

Thank you so much for joining my tour yesterday! You were both so kind and full of humor—James with your gentle heart and Mija with your wonderful grace. The weather was hot and humid, so I wasn’t sure how well I could adjust the tour for you, but I’m really glad to know you both enjoyed it. I also felt that you are such an inspiring couple, really my ideal image for the future. I am really looking forward to meeting again the next time you come to Japan. Thank you also for sharing the beautiful photos! Wishing you a wonderful journey from today onward!
