Walking along the Tsuki River side toward Shimozato area
Starting from **Ogawamachi Station**, this gentle walking tour leads international visitors into the heart of rural Saitama, following the clear waters of the **Tsukigawa River**. Leaving the town behind, the route soon opens into a peaceful landscape of rice paddies, vegetable fields, and low mountains, offering a vivid introduction to Japan’s countryside. Seasonal colors, birdsong, and the slow rhythm of farm life create an atmosphere that feels far removed from the cities.
As we walk along the riverbanks and quiet country roads, guides introduce the deep connection between Japanese culture, water, and agriculture. The path gradually brings us to the **Shimozato District**, widely recognized as a pioneering area for **organic farming in Japan**. Since the late 20th century, local farmers here have practiced environmentally friendly agriculture, emphasizing soil health, biodiversity, and community cooperation.
Visitors will learn how Shimozato’s farmers challenged conventional methods and helped shape Japan’s modern organic movement. The tour highlights traditional farming tools, sustainable techniques, and the philosophy behind producing safe, flavorful food in harmony with nature. With plenty of time for photos and conversation, this walk offers not just scenery, but insight into Japan’s values of balance, patience, and respect for the land.
Lunch and shopping at Michi-no-eki Ogawa
The tour itinerary can be flexibly adjusted to match guests’ interests, walking pace, and dietary preferences.
After exploring the Shimozato District and learning about its important role in the history of organic farming in Japan, the tour continues with a relaxing **lunch break at a newly renovated Roadside Station (Michi-no-Eki)**, reopened in 2025. This modern yet welcoming facility serves as a gateway between local producers and visitors, making it an ideal place to rest and enjoy regional cuisine.
Lunch highlights a **wide variety of local foods made with fresh, seasonal vegetables grown in Ogawa Town and the surrounding area**. Guests can experience how local ingredients are transformed into simple yet flavorful dishes that reflect the agricultural richness of the region. The menu typically includes vegetable-centered meals, light Japanese comfort foods, and options that showcase the natural taste of organically grown produce.
optional
Ogawa Town is also renowned for its long-standing tradition of **washi paper making**, which has been carefully preserved for generations. If participants are interested, the walking tour can be extended to include a visit to an area where this traditional craft is still practiced today.
At this location, guests may have the opportunity to observe or take part in a **hands-on washi paper-making experience**, using traditional methods passed down by local artisans. Through the process of hand-scooping paper from natural fibers, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for Japanese craftsmanship, patience, and the close relationship between nature and daily life.
This optional activity allows guests to personalize their tour experience, adding a meaningful cultural element that complements the agricultural and rural themes of Ogawa Town. By combining walking, local food, organic farming, and traditional crafts, the tour offers a well-balanced introduction to the area’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
