Walking tour in Alfama. Alfama is one of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods. The neighborhood built into the side of the castle hill is famous for its special atmosphere. We walk up to a great vantage point, then discover the hidden secrets of Alfama in the narrow alleys.
Casa dos Bicos (R. dos Bacalhoeiros 14A, 1100-070 Lisboa)
Our meeting place will be the 16th century building with an unmistakable facade.
It is the oldest Christian church in the city, which combines several styles.
Next to the cathedral stands the once dreaded prison, where hundreds of political prisoners suffered.
Our first rest stop, approaching the end of the climb, gives you a taste of the fantastic view.
The entire old part of the city lies under our feet! The sight will reward us for our efforts, from here we are already going downhill.
The Arabic-influenced city quarter is built into a hillside, but we choose our way to avoid the stairs. This way we will have the opportunity to get to know the sights and atmosphere of the district. Our path leads from public laundies to traditional fado restaurants, and at the end we arrive at the same place from which we started. We will stop for a ginjinha (cherry liqueur) and for a traditional cake.

What does "without stairs" mean?
It's a shame, but there is practically no accessibility in Lisbon. The city is built on hills, the streets are cobbled, often steep, and divided by stairs. "Without stairs" walks can also involve uneven terrain, curbs, or uphill walking, but we always try to choose the easiest route. We are traveling on a route that can be pushed along by a stroller or pram. We cannot guarantee that all locations are wheelchair or electric-scooter-accessible. If you have any questions, please email me and I will try my best. Each walk has a separate description of its length and difficulty.
Lisbon without stairs - The old Alfama quarter
length: about 2 km or 1,3 miles
climb: The walk includes a not too steep, but relatively longer (400 meters) ascent and a similar descent.
terrain: cobbled streets, lower curbs, rails. Due to the narrow and often crowded sidewalk, we may have to walk on the road. No stairs (neither up nor down)
reaching a starting point: Casa dos Bicos is accessible by taxi or public transport. Terreiro do Paço Metro Station is 250 meters (270 yards) away, and the Crusie Port is 700 meters (770 yards) away.
Check out my other walks, you can easily do two on the same day.
