Dogo Hot Spa is believed to be the oldest one in Japan, dating three thousand years. In ancient times, for example  in the 6th century, this area used to be an important stopping-off place to prepare an army and navy for a military campaign to the Korean peninsula. Then there were some emperors and empfresses who visited here. And anecdotedly,  Prince Shotoku, who was a very famous figure in Japan's history for establishing the first Japanese constitution, came here. Matsuyama is the home to haiku, the 31-syllable poem. Shiki Masaoka, who was born here in 1867, 150 years ago. He renovated haiku, which was on the verge of collapse in those days. He was a a man now deemed a great master of haiku. There are many haiku monuments in the city. Along the way you will many haiku monuments. And I will give you some information and you will sharpen your five senses-sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.Most of haiku come from human's sharpened senses.

And Shikoku is famous for henro pilgrimage. In Ishiteji Temple, one of the Shikoku 88 sacred temples, you will see pilgrims praying to the Buddha. And the temple's bell will satisfy you.

Matsuyama Castle is one of the most popular castles in Japan. It is located on a hill with a height of 132m. From the castle tower built in the main keep can you command a 360-degree panoramic view of the city, Mt. Ishizuchi and the Seto Inland Sea, which I think is superb. 

Matsuyama Castle is one of the only 12 castles retaining the structures built in the Edo period. The family of Matsudaira reigning the Matsuyama Domain was a relative of the Tokugawa Shogunate Family, meaning the behaviors of the feudal lord was very difficult at around the end of Edo period. During the tour course, you will be explained about subtle delicacy in the Matsuyama fief at the times around the collapse of the Tokugawa period or the beggining of the Meiji era.

Walking down the Ropeway street must be fun for you, because there are many restaurants and shops selling Ehime Specialties. 

This is the most popular course in many possible castle tours.

Uchiko is a small town located 40km southwest of Matsuyama, the prefectural capital. It used to prosper thanks to Japanese wax production. Visting this small town makes you understand how old Japan used to be. There are many traditional residences built in old days, still inhabited, and preserved as it were. People liviing there will welcome you.

Along the street in the Historic District Preservation Zone, there are many shops, which are unique and interesting to get in. Exploring such attractive shops must be fun.

This town has been also well-known for producing high quality Japanese paper. You can challenge to make paper yourself and bring your-own-made product back to your home as a token of good memory here.

Kite flying is a traditional Japanese activity. Here in Uchiko also, to be more exact, in Ikazaki, people are fond of showing off their handmade, favorite kites by flying them in the sky. Through the kites, you can get a glimpse into an aspect of Japanese culture.

Most of Uchiko is covered with forests. There is a world famous figure born in this town, who are Oe Kenzaburo, the Nobel Prize Winner in Literature in 1994. He was born in Uchiko in 1935 and the prize motivation is that he is the man who with poetic force creates an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today.

Anyway, Uchiko is a good place. You surely will feel as if time were passing slowly here. Visting this town makes you reflect on your past and give you a chance to think of the future in your life.

Matsuyama Castle is one of the most popular castles in Japan. It is located on a hill with a height of 132m. From the castle tower built in the main keep can you command a 360-degree panoramic view of the city, Mt. Ishizuchi and the Seto Inland Sea, which I think is superb. 

The castle tower is the symbol of the feudal lord reigning the area and have an important meaning. It is a must visit here in Matsuyama. But there are others which I would like to recommend you visit. They are the second and the third keeps. In a usual tour people will not visit these places. But in my opinion visiting these makes you more easily imagine how samurai did their works in the past of the Edo period. In those days, the feudal lord did not live in the castle tower, but in the second keep, which was located on the foot of the hill. The administrative office also was located in the second keep.  And the high ranking samujrai lived in the third keep. The third keep is near the second keep. There is a difference of about 90m in terms of altitude. So, after the tour you may have more delicios lunch.
