Looking for a relaxing break from the crowds? Mt. Tsukuba is a peaceful countryside escape just about 1.5 hours from Tokyo. In autumn, the mountain is full of beautiful fall colors, quiet forests, and historic spots that show a more traditional side of Japan. We’ll enjoy an easy nature walk, visit a local shrine, and take in wide views from the top—without rushing. A perfect day trip for travelers who want to slow down and enjoy a less touristy Japan.

Itinerary

12:30 PM

Meeting Point

Information center in Tsukubazan

- When you get off the bus at “Tsukubasan Jinja Iriguchi” bus stop, you will see the brown Tourist Information Center right in front of you. We will meet there. I will be waiting with a pink sign that says “Go With Guide”.

12:40 PM

Tsukubasan-jinjya (Tsukubasan Shrine)

We will visit Tsukubasan Shrine, which is dedicated to the gods of marital harmony and happy relationships. At the purification fountain, we will cleanse our hands and mouth before offering a prayer at the main shrine. After that, we will take a short walk along a small path behind the shrine to visit a hidden, smaller shrine and pray there as well.

12:50 PM

Carble car up

After that, we will take the cable car up to the summit area. As we ride, you can enjoy the beautiful seasonal scenery, including the expansive Kanto Plain spreading out below. In autumn, the vibrant colors of the leaves surround the cable car on both sides, creating a stunning view. Since Mount Tsukuba is much less crowded than other popular mountains, you can fully appreciate the peaceful and beautiful Japanese autumn.

01:00 PM

Two summits (Nantai-zan Nyotai-zan)

Once we reach the summit area, we will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Kanto Plain spread out below Mount Tsukuba. There are two peaks — Nantai and Nyotai — Nantai means “male mountain” and Nyotai means “female mountain.” Mount Tsukuba is known as a sacred place that enshrines the gods of marital harmony. Every year, a traditional festival is held where sacred portable shrines (mikoshi) are carried, celebrating the connection between the two peaks. Each takes about 20 minutes one way. We will walk at a comfortable pace, checking everyone’s condition. Please feel free to tell me anytime if you feel tired or need a break.

If it seems physically difficult for you, there is absolutely no need to push yourself to reach the peaks. Your comfort and safety are the top priority, so don’t hesitate to let me know.

During the hike, we will walk through forest paths and over rocky areas. Most of the trail is gentle, but there are some steeper rocks to climb, so please wear comfortable and sturdy shoes to avoid slipping or falling. It may feel chilly at the top, so bringing warm clothing is highly recommended.

02:10 PM

Carble car down

After exploring the peaks, we will take the cable car back down to the middle station.

02:40 PM

Tsukuba-michi(Tsukuba Road)

We will enjoy a short walk along Tsukuba-michi, one of Japan’s “Top 100 Roads.” On a clear day, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the Kanto Plain from there. The path is lined with traditional Japanese houses, creating a nostalgic atmosphere as we stroll through this historic area.

About Tour Guide Shun K.

I used to work for about five years at Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido, where I guided 6,000 to 7,000 international visitors annually for sightseeing and mountain hiking information.

Currently, I live in the southern area of Ibaraki Prefecture and would like to guide visitors to Mt. Tsukuba — a beautiful mountain just an hour and a half from Tokyo.

It’s a peaceful countryside destination away from Japan’s overtouristed spots, offering breathtaking scenery, traditional shrines, and historic temples that reflect Japan’s deep cultural heritage.

I truly hope visitors will be touched by the beauty and tranquility of this place.
