Meeting Point
Morioka Station Waterfall Square
- The Waterfall Square is at the East Exit of Morioka Station. We will take a bus from the nearby bus stop to Morioka city.
Konya-cho
Konya-cho got its name because dyers gathered along the Nakatsu River during the Edo period. The fabrics dyed with "Nanbu purple" and "Nanbu madder" were famous specialties of the Morioka domain. It developed as a merchant town along the historic Oshu Kaido highway.
Lunch Wanko soba @ azumaya
Wanko soba is a traditional noodle dish from Iwate Prefecture. Small, one-bite bowls of soba are served continuously. When you finish a bowl, a server immediately refills it, and this keeps going until you put the lid on your bowl to stop. (Reservations are hard to get on weekends, so you may have to wait.)
Sakurayama Shrine
Sakurayama Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine founded in 1749. It is located on the grounds of the Morioka Castle Ruins (Iwate Park) in Morioka City. For centuries, it has served as a spiritual protector for the local region and the Nambu domain.
Morioka Castle Ruins Park
Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park) is the former site of Morioka Castle, built in 1697 as the residence of the Nanbu domain lords. Designed into a modern public park in 1906, it features magnificent granite stonewalls and lush greenery in the heart of Morioka City. It is famous for cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant foliage in autumn, and illuminated stonewalls in winter.
Otaya Shimizu
Otaya Shimizu Cold SpringTucked away just a few steps from Morioka’s bustling "Odori" shopping street, Otaya Shimizu is a hidden historic gem. It is celebrated as one of the "Three Famous Springs of Morioka."During the samurai era, this spring produced the finest water in the castle town. The ruling Nanbu clan strictly controlled it, using its pure water exclusively for the Lord’s tea ceremonies and the castle's inner palace. Today, this peaceful stone-walled spot remains a refreshing oasis where locals and travelers can rest and drink the cool, flowing spring water.
Ishiwari Zakura
"Ishiwarizakura (The Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree) is an approximately 400-year-old cherry tree growing out of a crack in a giant granite boulder."
