Meeting Point

Kanazawa Station, Tsuzumi Gate (or your hotel in Kanazawa)

- Your adventure begins at Kanazawa Station, right under the famous Tsuzumi Gate, a giant wooden gate inspired by a traditional Japanese drum. It's one of Japan's most photogenic station entrances, and the perfect place to start. Your licensed guide will be waiting with a name sign. Prefer to skip the station? No problem! If you're staying at a hotel in Kanazawa, just tell us the name when you book and we'll meet you in the lobby. We'll start with a quick introduction to Kanazawa and the powerful Maeda clan who shaped it, then hop on a short local bus (about 15 minutes) to our first highlight. Bus fare is not included.

Kenrokuen Garden (about 60 min)

Step into Kenrokuen, one of Japan's Three Great Gardens, and let your guide show you how to truly "read" a Japanese landscape garden. Visit the iconic Kotoji Lantern beside Kasumigaike Pond, wander under ancient pines held up by elegant wooden supports, and discover why this garden was designed to have all six qualities of a perfect garden: spaciousness, serenity, artistry, antiquity, flowing water and wide views.

Every season brings its own magic: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greens in summer, fiery maples in autumn, and snow-ringed pines in winter. Whatever the season, expect beautiful photos at every turn.

Tea Break (about 25 min)

Time to slow down. Settle in at a traditional teahouse or cafe near the garden and enjoy a bowl of frothy matcha with a Kanazawa sweet. Your guide will explain the basics of Japanese tea culture, so you'll know what's in front of you. A peaceful pause before the next chapter of the walk.

(Tea and sweets are not included in the tour price.)

Kanazawa Castle Park (about 45 min)

Walk through the grand Ishikawa Gate and into the former home of the Maeda clan, one of the most powerful samurai families in Japan. See the white-walled Hishi Yagura turret and the long Gojikken Nagaya storehouse, both rebuilt using traditional carpentry. Then admire the stone walls, famous for the many different styles of stonework used by master masons.

Your guide will tell the dramatic story of how this castle burned, was rebuilt, and became the heart of Kanazawa's culture. You'll leave with a new feel for the city's samurai past.

Nagamachi Samurai District (about 45 min)

Wander the quiet, atmospheric lanes of Nagamachi, where samurai families once lived. Golden-brown earthen walls, stone-paved alleys, and a gentle canal make this one of the best places in Japan to feel the Edo period. In winter, the walls are wrapped in straw mats to protect them from the snow.

Step inside a restored samurai residence to see its beautiful rooms and garden, and imagine daily life for a warrior's family. Your guide will share stories and details you'd never notice on your own.

Ending Point

Nagamachi Samurai District (near Korinbo, Kanazawa city center). Your guide will recommend lunch spots and souvenirs nearby.

About Tour Guide Kenji K.

Hello and welcome to Japan! I am a Japan National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter based in Toyama, in the Hokuriku region of Japan.

I have over 25 years of experience teaching English in Japan and hold a Master’s degree in TESOL from a university in the United States. My experience as an English educator has taught me how to communicate clearly and make people from different cultural backgrounds feel comfortable and welcome.

I obtained my Regional Guide Interpreter certification in Toyama in 2019 and began actively guiding visitors in 2025. Since then, I have guided visitors in Kanazawa through volunteer activities and have also conducted several paid FIT walking tours. In 2026, I became a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter, completed professional guide training with IJCEE, and obtained a Tour Conductor qualification.

I specialize in Toyama, Kanazawa, Takayama, and Shirakawa-go, as well as other destinations in the Hokuriku and surrounding Central Japan regions.

What I enjoy most about guiding is helping visitors discover not only famous sights, but also the stories, food, traditions, gardens, local culture, and everyday life that make Japan special. I particularly enjoy creating relaxed and personalized experiences for travelers who want to see Japan from a local perspective.

I look forward to helping you discover a memorable and authentic side of Japan!
