Walk through historic Arima Onsen before the main crowds arrive. This charming mountain village features narrow stone streets, traditional wooden buildings, and small shops selling souvenirs and freshly made manju sweets.
Stop at the free outdoor foot bath at Tenjin Gensen Park, gold spring water, open to everyone at no charge, right in the heart of the village.
Guests also have four public bathing options:
• Free foot bath — Tenjin Gensen Park: No charge. Gold spring water. Open all day.

All bathhouses follow Japan's customary nude bathing style with separate areas for men and women. Guests typically spend 45 to 60 minutes soaking. Arima's history dates back over 1,000 years, one of Japan's oldest and most celebrated hot spring towns.
Takenake Nikuten - Butcher Shop
Takenaka Meat Shop is a well-known local butcher shop and street food counter in the heart of Arima Onsen, famous for its freshly made Kobe beef croquettes and savory meat snacks. This is a perfect light lunch stop or mid-day snack while exploring the village, especially for visitors who want to sample Kobe beef without committing to a full steak restaurant.
The shop serves crispy croquettes made with Kobe beef and potatoes, along with other simple grilled or fried meat bites prepared fresh throughout the day. These snacks are affordable, flavorful, and easy to enjoy while strolling the narrow streets of the historic hot spring town.
Because many visitors plan a larger meal later in the day, this quick stop works well as a small bite to hold you over until dinner. It’s a casual, authentic experience that locals and visitors alike enjoy, and one of the best budget-friendly ways to taste Kobe beef in Arima.
Grab a croquette or skewer, step outside, and enjoy it while continuing your walk through the charming streets of Arima Onsen.
NOTE: This location is closed on Wednesdays - alternative options for this day.

After the ropeway, your guide will suggest lunch options based on your group's budget, appetite, and dietary preferences. All recommendations are local restaurants, not tourist-facing menus, not inflated harbor pricing.
Options include:
• Kobe beef: teppanyaki, yakiniku (grilled at your table), shabu-shabu, or steak. Kobe beef ranges widely by cut and style. Your guide knows restaurants that serve the real thing at fair local prices. Budget ¥3,000~¥8,000 per person (~$20~$55 USD).
• Ramen: Kobe has a strong ramen culture. Quick, satisfying, and easy on the budget. Budget ¥900~¥1,500 per person (~$6~$10 USD).
• Sushi: Casual counter sushi or set lunch at a local restaurant. Budget ¥1,500~¥3,500 per person (~$10~$24 USD).
• Shabu-shabu or sukiyaki: Thin-sliced beef cooked in broth at the table. A relaxed, social style of eating. Budget ¥2,000~¥5,000 per person (~$14~$35 USD).
• Vegetarian, halal, or dietary needs; please advise at booking. Your guide can identify suitable options in advance.
Before your tour date, your guide will connect with you to confirm lunch preferences, dietary needs, and budget, so there are no decisions to make on the day, just sit down and eat.
Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens & Ropeway
Take a scenic ride on the Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway, a gondola that climbs the mountainside from near Shin-Kobe Station toward the slopes of Mount Rokko. As the cabin rises above the city, you’ll enjoy expansive views over Kobe, the harbor, and Osaka Bay, with the skyline gradually opening into wide coastal panoramas.
At the top you’ll arrive at the beautiful Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens. Set along the mountainside, the gardens feature seasonal flowers, walking paths, and some of the best panoramic viewpoints in Kobe. Several scenic terraces and relaxation areas allow visitors to slow down and enjoy the surroundings, including hammocks and quiet garden spaces where you can take in the mountain air and views over the city below.
Small cafés and snack stands at the summit offer light refreshments, drinks, and ice cream, making it a pleasant place to relax before continuing the tour. With its combination of nature, scenery, and peaceful viewpoints, the herb garden provides a refreshing escape just minutes from the city.
Round-trip ropeway admission is approximately ¥1,000 per person.
Leave Herb Garden and Rope-way. Walk through Kobe to Meriken Park and Harborland.
After descending on the Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway, we continue on foot through the welcoming streets of Kobe, a city known for its relaxed atmosphere, international history, and pleasant walkability.
Kobe is one of Japan's most comfortable cities to explore on foot, with wide sidewalks, attractive storefronts, and a mix of modern shopping streets and historic neighborhoods.
Along the way, we pass through lively shopping areas where you can browse local boutiques, cafés, and specialty food shops; a glimpse of everyday Kobe life that reflects the city's long connection with international trade and culture.
Our walk leads toward the waterfront, arriving at Meriken Park and Kobe Harborland. Before exploring the wider harbor, we stop at the Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park, a section of the original pier left untouched since the Great Hanshin Earthquake on January 17, 1995. The cracked pavement, tilted lampposts, and collapsed quayside are preserved exactly as the quake left them. It is one of the most quietly powerful places in Japan, and easy to walk past without understanding what you are looking at. With context, it stops you.
From there the waterfront opens up, the KOBE sign, Kobe Port Tower, the Harborland canal walk, and views across the bay toward Awaji Island. The walk provides a relaxed way to experience Kobe's charm, moving from mountain scenery down through city streets to the harborfront as the light changes over the water.
Drop-off Sannomiya Station or Hotel Lobby.
Back to Sannomiya, and the end of a day that covered more ground than it probably felt like.
You soaked in gold spring water that turns orange on contact with air and exists in only a handful of places on earth. You rode a gondola above a city that most visitors never slow down enough to see properly. You stood at the earthquake memorial where a section of Kobe's pier was left exactly as the 1995 quake left it, cracked, tilted, preserved; because some things shouldn't be smoothed over. You watched the harbor go gold at dusk from one of the best waterfront walks in Japan.
And somewhere in the middle of all that, you had a decent lunch that didn't cost you twice what it should.
That's a Kobe day done right. Your guide knows a few more of them if you find yourself back in Kansai.
Ending Point
Sannomiya or Shin-kobe station or your hotel lobby in Kobe.

Tour Important Information
At the summit of the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens, visitors can enjoy one of the most scenic viewpoints in Kobe. The gardens feature more than 200 varieties of herbs and seasonal flowers spread across beautifully landscaped terraces overlooking the city, Kobe Harbor, and the Seto Inland Sea. Walking paths connect themed garden areas, greenhouses, observation decks, and relaxing cafés. Throughout the year the gardens change with the seasons, offering blooming flowers in spring, vibrant greenery in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and festive illuminations during certain times of the year.
At the waterfront area of Meriken Park, visitors can stroll along the harbor promenade and enjoy views of the port skyline. Romantic harbor cruises depart from this area, offering a relaxing way to see Kobe from the water. Some tickets may be available on the day of departure, though advance reservations are recommended, especially during busy seasons.
From the park you can also admire panoramic views from the observation deck of Kobe Port Tower or explore the nearby waterfront dining and shopping complex Kobe Harborland Umie Mosaic. In the evening, the harbor area is particularly beautiful, with sunsets and city lights creating a romantic atmosphere.

Important message from the supplier
Flexible Hours — Early Mornings & Evening Tours Available
While most temples, shrines, and tourist attractions operate standard hours (typically 8am–5pm), I am available well outside those windows, from early morning starts through to late evening.
Many of Japan's most iconic locations take on an entirely different character before the daily crowds arrive or after they've gone. Temple grounds and shrine precincts that are packed by 9am are peaceful and atmospheric at dawn. Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, one of the busiest sites in the country, is a genuinely different experience at 6am or after dark. The same is true for many locations in Nara, Osaka, and Kobe.
A number of sites are also accessible 24 hours, meaning we can time a visit entirely around the light, the atmosphere, or simply your schedule, rather than standard business hours.
If you prefer an early start, a late finish, or a full extended day, I'm happy to accommodate. Just mention it when you enquire, and I'll build the timing around what works best for you.
Cancellation Policy
- Free cancellation - 8 days prior to meeting time

About Tour Guide Shawn D.
My name is Shawn. I am American and I have been living in Japan for the last 15 years. What started as a chapter became a life, and Japan has shaped who I am in ways I am still discovering.
I guide exclusively in English. After 15 years as a foreigner navigating this country, I understand what genuinely moves Western visitors, what surprises them, and most importantly, the difference between a quality experience and a tourist trap. I will always steer you toward the real thing.
I am based in Kobe, a city that most tourists fly straight past on their way to Osaka and Kyoto. That is their loss and your opportunity. Kobe is a relaxed, walkable port city with a character unlike anywhere else in Japan. Yes, the Kobe beef is world class. But Kobe is also one of the most historically rich and visually beautiful cities in the country, without the overwhelming crowds you will find elsewhere. I know this city and this region deeply.
From Kobe, Kyoto and Osaka are both reachable in well under an hour by train. That puts you at the center of the best region in Japan without the noise and chaos of staying in a major tourist hub.
I cover the full Kansai region and beyond, from famous landmarks and cultural sites to the strictly local places most visitors never find. I am also available for early morning and late evening tours. Some of the most memorable experiences in Japan happen when the crowds are gone.
Every tour is planned around you. Tell me what matters and I will build the day around it.
Come find out what Japan means to you.

Exploring Kobe, Hyogo
Kobe come to a vital life again from intense earthquake that hit on Jan 17, 1995. Kobe always creates us a resplendent, exotic mood that the cosmopolitan city has. The old foreign settlement where sophisticated modern architecture still remains upper town must be the reason to ferment that atmosphere and give the period of cosmopolitan flavor. At Meriken Wharf, you can hear the whistles of ships and touch cultural history in this city.
