Kobe Nunobiki Ropeway & Herb-garden

Nunobiki Dam and Reservoir

Constructed 120 years ago for Kobe's very first waterworks system, this gravity dam sits in the Nunobiki Valley. This deep gorge was naturally formed by the Nunobiki Fault—without it, this historic reservoir and the four waterfalls below would not be here.

Nunobiki Waterfalls

The Nunobiki Waterfalls, a celebrated four-tiered cascade, rank among Japan’s three most sacred waterfalls and have been immortalized in Japanese classical literature and poetry for centuries. Beautifully framed by fresh spring greenery or vivid autumn foliage, the mist-fresh air and gentle sound of cascading water offer a deeply soothing escape.

Tokko-in a tranquil, serene temple

If time permits, let’s stop by Tokko-in Temple, a tranquil and secluded haven. Reestablished nearly 120 years ago by a local Kobe entrepreneur as a Rinzai Tenryu-ji Zen training hall, it stands on the historic site of Taki-dera (waterfall) Temple, which dates back to 697 AD. The striking bell tower, main gate, and Tahoto multi-storied pagoda were relocated here, preserving centuries of rich heritage.
