Hidden Paths of Nara: Walking tour from Ikoma to Todai-ji
This tour offers a perfect balance of Nara’s epic landmarks and its hidden, soulful corners. We'll start by ascending the stairs of Ikoma Shoten to the massive Great Buddha and the lantern-lined forest of Kasuga Taisha to the hidden alleys of Takabatake. We’ll dodge the main tourist trails to find the breezy old home of a Japanese literary legend and enjoy the quiet, mossy walls of the local neighborhood. It’s a perfect look at both the famous temples and the city’s secret corners."

Meeting Point
Ikoma Station
- Ikoma Station (Kintetsu Line) right outside the Central Exit gates
Hozanji Temple
The temple features a dramatic backdrop of a massive rock wall (the Hannya Grotto) where Buddhist statues are carved directly into the stone. A long, atmospheric stone stairway leads up to the temple, lined with traditional inns and stone lanterns that create a scene reminiscent of Spirited Away at dusk.
Home of the "God of the Novel"
Escaping the crowds of central Nara for a peaceful stroll through Takabatake. This area is defined by moss-covered earthen walls and the 'Whispering Path' (Sasayaki-no-komichi). Highlighting the day is a visit to Shiga Naoya’s house, an architectural gem designed for light and cross-breezes, followed by a wander through the forest edges near Kasuga Taisha."
Kasuga Taisha
Follow the forest path lined with over 3,000 stone lanterns. At the Shrine let's take a look at the "Eternal Dark" Room: it is kept pitch black and filled with glowing bronze lanterns, giving you the magical "festival" feel year-round.
Todai-ji Nigatsu-do
It’s one of the few places in Nara with a panoramic, elevated vista. It feels much older and quieter than the main temple below, with lanterns lining the balcony and a cool breeze coming off the mountain. The name literally means "Hall of the Second Month," referring to when its ancient spring rituals take place.
Todai-ji
Explore the UNESCO World Heritage and stand in the shadow of the Great Buddha, test your luck by squeezing through the 'Buddha’s Nostril'.
Nara Park
It’s not just a park; it's the home of several UNESCO World Heritage sites, think of Nara Park as the city’s massive, green living room that's shared with over 1,200 wild deer who have called this place home for centuries.
