Requiem for the victims of Kobe quake

Kobe Luminarie was first held in December 1995 to mourn for the victims of the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake.
Luminarie has now become an annual winter event in Kobe and highlights include illuminated gates and arches.  The gates and arches make a spectacular corridor of light, which people can walk through.  The event was designed to give the residents "hope" and "light" to reconstruct their severely damaged city.
Every year, the event attracted about 5 million people.
Originating from 16th century Italian church art, a luminarie is a huge display of multi-colored lights.
