This tour explores how Edo became one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the world. and how Edo culture created Kabuki. We begin our tour at the Edo-Tokyo Museum to understand the city’s design, the roles of samurai and merchants, and the daily life of common people. Then, we move to Ginza to experience a live Kabuki performance and learn how this vibrant art form continues to thrive. This tour connects history with modern times in an engaging way.

Meeting Point
Kawasaki Station
- We will meet at Kawasaki Station (JR Line), Central Ticket Gate. After exiting the ticket gate, please wait near the large electronic departure board in the main concourse. The area is spacious and easy to recognize. Your guide will be holding a sign with your name. If you are arriving by taxi, please ask to be dropped off at the JR Kawasaki Station Central Entrance. Please arrive 5–10 minutes before the start time to ensure a smooth departure to Tokyo.
Edo Tokyo Museum・Ryogoku
The Edo-Tokyo Museum introduces how Edo grew into one of the largest cities in the world. Through large-scale models, detailed replicas, and immersive exhibits, you can understand the city’s layout, the roles of samurai and merchants, and the daily lives of common people. Highlights include the full-scale replica of the Nihonbashi Bridge and miniature models that reveal how urban planning worked in Edo. This visit helps guests clearly understand how Edo gave rise to an interesting everyday culture including Kabuki.
Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Stadium
After visiting the Edo-Tokyo Museum, we will take a short walk around the Ryogoku Kokugikan area, the heart of Japan’s professional sumo world. During this 30-minute stroll, I will introduce the history of sumo, its connection to Shinto rituals, and how sumo became one of the most popular forms of entertainment during the Edo period.
As we walk through the neighborhood, you may see sumo stables and even sample Chanko Nabe.This area helps us understand how Edo’s urban culture blended sports, and entertainment.
Lunch at Ryogoku
After exploring the Edo-Tokyo Museum, we will enjoy a relaxed lunch at Ryogoku, a district long associated with Edo’s popular culture. This area, famous for sumo wrestling, still preserves the atmosphere of traditional downtown. Guests can choose from local specialties such as soba noodles, tempura, and ramen. Lunch here is not only a break, but also part of the story. In the Edo period, simple and quick meals like soba were popular among townspeople. This moment allows us to experience the everyday food culture that supported the vibrant life of Edo before going to Ginza for the Kabuki performance.
Kabuki Overview at the Museum
Before entering the theatre, we will visit the Kabuki Museum to learn about the world of Kabuki. Through stage models, costumes, and interactive exhibits, I will introduce the history of Kabuki, its unique acting style, and the symbolism behind makeup, costumes, and stage techniques. This visit will help you better understand the performance you are about to watch.
Kabuki One-Act Viewing at the Kabuki Theater
At 3:30 PM, we will arrive at Kabukiza Theatre for the Ichimaku-mi, a special system that allows visitors to watch a single act of Kabuki. The performance begins at 4:00 PM as part of the afternoon program.
Please note that the tour will end before entering the theatre, and the guide will not accompany guests inside for the performance. Tickets for Ichimaku-mi can be purchased online from 12:00 PM on the day before the performance, and guests are asked to purchase their own tickets in advance. The price for Ichimaku-mi tickets is approximately 1,000–3,000 JPY per person, depending on the performance.
For international visitors, English audio guides are available for rent inside the theatre, which explain the story, characters, and stage techniques during the performance. Even if you are new to Kabuki, this experience offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the dramatic acting, elaborate costumes, and unique stage traditions of Japan’s classical theatre.

The tour officially ends at Yokohama Station in Kanagawa. But guests may also choose to end the tour at Kabukiza Theatre or earlier in Tokyo.
This tour involves a moderate amount of walking along streets, so please wear comfortable shoes.
Most of the tour takes place outdoors. Please bring sun protection, a hat, or rain gear depending on the weather.
Some restaurants and small shops may prefer cash, so bringing some cash is recommended.
