How warriors replaced aristocrats in Japan
This tour explains how power shifted from aristocrats to samurai.
In the Heian period (aristocrat rule) Japan was ruled by elegant aristocrats in Kyoto.
But in the 12th century, samurai gained power and created a new government in Kamakura.
During the tour, we compare samurai and knights to help you understand this change easily.

Kotokuin-Temple
Kotoku-in Temple is home to the Great Buddha of Kamakura, one of the most famous Buddhist statues in Japan.
The bronze statue was built in the 13th century during the Kamakura period, when samurai ruled Japan. It stands about 11 meters tall and has become a symbol of Kamakura.
Originally, the Great Buddha was housed inside a large temple hall, but the building was destroyed by typhoons and tidal waves. Since then, the statue has remained in the open air for centuries.
Today, visitors can walk around the statue and even enter inside the Buddha, which offers a rare opportunity to see the structure of the historic monument.
Temple Gardens & Coastal Views/ Hasedera temple
Hasedera Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in Kamakura, famous for its gardens and scenic views.
The temple is home to a large wooden statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Standing about 9 meters tall, it is one of the largest wooden Buddhist statues in Japan.
Visitors can also enjoy a peaceful view of Yuigahama Beach from the temple terrace.
With its beautiful gardens, impressive statue, and ocean views, Hasedera offers a relaxing and memorable stop on the Kamakura tour.
