Yokohama: Japan’s First Global City
This tour explores how Yokohama became more an international city. When Japan opened to the world in the 19th century, foreign merchants, and Chinese traders settled in Yokohama, not in Tokyo. As we walk through the port area, Chinatown, and Yamashita park., you will discover how cultural exchange gave Yokohama a unique identity. By the end of the tour, you will see how two neighboring cities developed very different personalities

Meeting Point
Yokohama Station
- We will meet at JR Yokohama Station, Central North Exit. Please wait near the ticket gates of the Central North Exit (not the West or East Exit, as the station is large). I will send you a photo of the exact meeting spot after booking to make it easy to find. Yokohama Station is easily accessible from Tokyo and major train lines.
Yokohama Port and Osanbashi Pier Area
We begin at Yokohama Port and the Osanbashi Pier area, where Japan first opened its doors to the world in 1859. While Edo (Tokyo) remained a political center, Yokohama became the gateway for foreign merchants, diplomats, and traders.
Here, I will explain why the shogunate chose Yokohama as the port of entry, how foreign settlements were established, and how international trade quickly transformed this small fishing village into Japan’s first truly global city. Standing by the harbor, you can imagine the moment when Japan stepped onto the world stage.
Yamashita Park & Former Foreign Settlement
Next, we explore the area around Yamashita Park, which was once part of the foreign settlement established after the opening of Yokohama. In the late 19th century, this district became home to Western merchants, diplomats, and entrepreneurs who introduced new lifestyles, businesses, and cultural practices to Japan.
Here, I will explain how clubs, hotels, newspapers, and modern sports first appeared in this neighborhood — long before Tokyo fully embraced international culture. As we walk through the area, you will see how Yokohama developed a more open and outward-looking identity from Tokyo.
Yokohama Chinatown
We will then visit Yokohama Chinatown, one of the largest and most vibrant Chinatowns in Asia. This area developed as Chinese merchants and traders settled in Yokohama to support international trade in the 19th century. While Tokyo remained a political capital, Yokohama became a place where different cultures mixed through commerce and daily life.
Here, I will explain the role of the Chinese community in building Yokohama’s commercial identity and how global trade networks shaped the city’s character. We will also take a relaxed 30-minute lunch break, where you can enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine and experience the lively atmosphere of this historic district.
Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse
Our final stop is the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, a symbol of the city’s transformation into a modern trading hub. Originally built in the early 20th century as customs warehouses, these buildings supported the rapid growth of international commerce through Yokohama’s port.
Here, I will explain how infrastructure such as shipping, storage, and trade logistics helped shape Yokohama’s identity as a commercial and outward-looking city. As we walk through the renovated warehouse district, you will see how a historic trade center has evolved into a creative and cultural space — reflecting Yokohama’s long tradition of openness and adaptation.
