Unkei Buddha Statue Viewing & Meditation
Unkei, one of Japan’s most celebrated Buddhist sculptors, is often described as a “master of beauty,” a “genius sculptor,” and even “the Michelangelo of Japan.” His works continue to be revered as some of the greatest achievements in Japanese art.
Today, only 19 Buddhist statues are widely recognized as authentic works by Unkei throughout Japan. Remarkably, five of these masterpieces are housed at Jorakuji Temple and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
During this special experience, you will have the rare opportunity to sit in meditation just a short distance from these extraordinary statues. Sitting before works that have transcended more than 800 years of history, many visitors feel a profound sense of presence, serenity, and connection.
Meditating in the same space as these sacred masterpieces offers a truly unique and unforgettable encounter with Japanese spirituality, art, and history.
