Ise Jingu in western Japan is the most venerated Shinto sanctuary of great spiritual and historical significance. It attracts more than 8 million worshippers every year. This sacred shrine consists of 125 shrine centering on the two main sanctuaries: naiku, or inner shrine, and Geku, or outer shrine. Inner shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikakmi, the supreme goddess shining like the sun, who is the ancestral deity of the Japanese Imperial family. Geku is dedicated to Toyouke Omikakmi, the deity who offers sacred food to the supreme goddess.
Main shrine is rebuilt once every 20 years for the deity to move from old shrine to new shrine, called "shikinensengu." A visit to shrine is called "Oisemairi" or "Okagemairi." It is very popular for Japanese people during the Edo period.
There are two retro-inspired streets such as Oharai Yokocho and Okage Yokocho near Ujibashi. Akafuku mochi are soft cakes covered with sweet bean paste and local popular sweets. Ise udon is also a popular thick noodle dipped in the richly textured black soup.
For you reference, we stay in Ise Jingu Shrine for 5 hours because the around-trip time between Osaka and Ise is 3 hours.
