Ashikaga Gakko
Ashikaga Gakko, also known as the Ashikaga School, is truly a remarkable place with a long and fascinating history. It's renowned as Japan's oldest school and is even considered by some to be where Japanese school education truly began.
Here's what makes Ashikaga Gakko so special:
Ancient Origins: While the exact founding date is debated, it's believed to have been established sometime between the early Heian period (around 832) and the Kamakura period. It was significantly revived in 1432 by Uesugi Norizane, a powerful lord, who brought in books and a new headmaster, attracting students from all over Japan.
A Renowned University: At its peak in the 16th century, Ashikaga Gakko was a thriving academic center, boasting an impressive 3,000 students. Even the famous missionary Saint Francis Xavier noted it in 1549 as "the largest and most renowned university of eastern Japan," spreading its reputation internationally.
Curriculum: Students came to study a wide range of subjects, primarily Confucianism and Chinese classical literature, but also including Chinese medicine, divination, and even military studies. While Zen monks often served as instructors, the focus was on secular learning.
National Historic Site & Japan Heritage: The Ashikaga Gakko site, including its existing buildings like the Confucian temple and gates, was designated a National Historic Site in 1928. It was also recognized as a Japan Heritage site in 2015, highlighting its cultural significance.
Bannaji temple
Bannaji Temple in Ashikaga is a fascinating and beautiful Buddhist temple with a unique history deeply intertwined with the powerful Ashikaga clan, who founded the Muromachi Shogunate.
Here's what makes Bannaji Temple a must-visit:
Former Samurai Residence, Now a Temple: What's really special about Bannaji is its origin. It wasn't always a temple; it was originally the fortified residence of the Ashikaga clan! In 1196, Ashikaga Yoshikane, a key figure in the clan, converted his residence into a personal Buddhist temple dedicated to Dainichi Nyorai (Vairocana Buddha). This history is still evident today in its unusual layout, surrounded by a moat and earthen walls, giving it the feel of a samurai fortress. In fact, it's even recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles.
National Treasure Main Hall: The temple's main hall (Hondo) is a National Treasure of Japan. Built in 1299 by Ashikaga Sadauji (father of Ashikaga Takauji, the first Ashikaga Shogun), it's a valuable example of early esoteric Buddhist temple architecture with strong Zen influences, and one of the oldest wooden structures in Tochigi Prefecture.
Ashikaga Clan Connections: Bannaji served as the ancestral temple of the Ashikaga clan. Many of their family members are enshrined here, making it a significant site for understanding the history of this powerful samurai family.
Beautiful Grounds and Seasonal Scenery: The temple grounds are extensive and well-maintained, offering a serene atmosphere for a stroll.
Lunch in Ashikaga
Ashikaga has a variety of restaurants catering to different tastes, from local specialties to more general Japanese and even some Western options. Here's a rundown of what you can expect and some popular choices:
Local Specialties to Try in Ashikaga:
Sauce Katsudon (ソースかつ丼): This is arguably Ashikaga's most famous local dish. It features a deep-fried pork cutlet (tonkatsu) served over rice, but what makes it unique is the special sweet and savory fruit and vegetable sauce poured generously over the katsu. Many restaurants have their own secret sauce recipes, so trying a few variations can be fun!
Ashikaga Shumai (足利シュウマイ): Unlike typical shumai (dumplings) which often contain meat, Ashikaga Shumai are traditionally made primarily with onion and starch powder. They are light and often served steamed. You might find them at local eateries, like Benkyotei Honten.
Himokawa Udon (ひもかわうどん): While more associated with Kiryu (a nearby city), some places in Ashikaga might offer this unique udon. It's famous for its exceptionally wide, flat noodles.
Ashikaga Maru Beef (足利マル牛): This is a local brand of beef, where cattle are fed on "MARU" - the strained grape lees produced when making wine. You can find this beef at yakiniku (BBQ) restaurants in the area.
Ashikaga Flower Park
Ashikaga Flower Park is a famous park known for its amazing flowers, especially wisteria. It's beautiful all year round!
Why It's Famous:
Wisteria (Fuji) Flowers: This is the main reason people come! The park has over 350 wisteria trees, including a huge 160-year-old tree that covers a very big area. There's also a long tunnel of white wisteria. It looks like a dream! CNN even called it one of the "10 dream destinations."
Night Lights: At night, the wisteria flowers are lit up, making them look magical. In winter, the park has a huge light show called "Garden of Light Flowers," where millions of lights create flower shapes.
What to See Each Season:
Mid-April to Mid-May: This is Wisteria Story time! It's the best time to see all the different colored wisteria flowers. The lights at night are incredible.
Mid-May to Early June: You'll see beautiful roses.
Early June to Early July: Hydrangeas and irises bloom, making the park blue and white.
Mid-October to Mid-February: This is for the Winter Illumination, one of Japan's best light shows.

“A great Initial D experience!”
Andy was a pleasure to be with and was very knowledgeable about the tour, taking the time to drive us to the fictional delivery driver's home course along with the other loactions they feature on the show. He was also very communicative prior to the tour to ensure we knew when and where to meet up with him. I highly recommend taking this tour for the diehard Initial D fan.
