In Kochi, many foreign tourists visit Kochi Castle and enjoy taking pictures of the castle tower, the main gate and the main citadel. Of course, these spots are magnificent with the long history. You will be satisfied with these sightseeing spots, but there are some hidden spots and devices in the castle. If you visit them, you will be able to have a wonderful opportunity to learn something new and interesting about Japanese castles, and your viewpoint about Japanese castles will change dramatically.
Ishidoi (Stone gutters)
At the higher part of the stone wall, a kind of jumping board is taken out from the wall. Did soldiers attack the enemy from that board? No, they didn't. That is the drainage system in Kochi Castle. It is a stone gutter called "Ishidoi". It was made about 400 years ago. In Japan, no other castles have these kinds of stone gutters. Why does this castle need the stone gutters? Why don't you join my tour to find the answer? And the shapes of other gutters are unique.
The Mark of The Wedge
In those days, people had to cut huge rocks to make the stone walls and stone stairs. Of course, there were no machines to cut many rocks. So, they used some wedges to change rocks into suitable shapes. These three rectangular holes were made when people drove the wedges into the rocks. But what were the wedges made from? And how did people use them? Please find the mystery with me.
Shinobi Gaeshi
Look at these iron spikes. They are called Shinobi Gaeshi. Shinobi meant Ninjya and Gaeshi was the device which prevented Ninjya from entering the castle. Kochi Castle is the only castle in Japan which has kept the original Shinobi Gaeshi for about 400 years. When I was a small kid, I climbed the stone walls of this castle with my friends. This kind of dangerous act is prohibited, but we tried to show our baseless courage. Of course, we were severely scolded by the teachers. Let's suppose we are Ninjya and think of the strategy to climb the steep stone walls with the local guide who is knowledgeable about the castle.
Conclusion
Of course, there are many historic sightseeing spots in Kochi Castle. But why don't you explore the hidden spots and devices, which are intellectually exciting and amusing. You don’t have to experience these activities by yourselves. As a local guide, I will show you around Kochi Castle safely and happily.
