Nature

Many experts of geology come to Muroto in Kochi from all over the world. In Muroto they can investigate rocks, layers of earth and geologic faults which are the living evidence that the earth is causing the dynamic movement. At first, people hesitate to learn the earth movement because it seems quite difficult for them. Actually, I also avoided the topic first, but I’m very interested in the geology because the staff from Muroto Global Geopark Center have taught me the basic points from ground zero. During my tour, I will help you enjoy the wonder of the geology, especially the specific geology of Muroto. Then after the journey your viewpoint about the geology will change drastically.

1. Why Are There Many Vertical Lines Along The Huge Rocks?

It is said that sand layers and mud layers are stacked at the bottom of the ocean. And these layers have become rocks and been moved to the land. Usually, in this case, there should be lateral lines between each layer. But, in this photo, the lines are vertical. On this beach, most rocks have these kinds of vertical lines. In fact, this phenomenon is caused by the Philippine Sea Plate under the Eurasian Plate along the Nankai Trough. Once you know the mechanism of the movement, you will be able to understand natural phenomena of the earth and be fascinated by the wonder. Why don’t you join my tour to explore it?

2. The Evidence Of Earthquakes That Have Occurred Every 100 Years Here

This is the ocean which is looked at from the tip of Muroto Cape. In the center of the photo, you see three groups of rocks arranged in tandem. The farthest group consists of about four smaller rocks. The middle group is consisted of about ten medium-sized rocks.  The nearest group is consisted of about a few larger rocks. The farthest group is the evidence that a huge earthquake occurred in 1944. The middle group is the evidence that a huge earthquake occurred in 1854. The nearest group is the evidence that a huge earthquake occurred in 1707. I think that you notice the common interval period between the huge earthquakes. Why is there the common interval period?  During my tour, I’m sure you will find the answer.

3.  Mikurodo Cave, Where The Famous Buddhist Monk Kukai Underwent Training 1200 years ago.

Now this cave is located about ten meters above the sea level. But, it is said that about 2800 years ago it was located near the beach. Has the cave moved by itself? Let’s find the answer to the mystery during my tour!

Conclusion

Even if you don’t know the geology quite well or are not interested in it, I’m sure I’ll make you fascinated by the wonder and mechanism of the earth movement around Muroto Cape. You don’t have to experience these interesting moments by yourselves. As a local guide, I will show you around Muroto Cape safely and happily.
