My career has always focused on caring for people in English speaking roles: as a British Airways flight attendant, a medical interpreter at an international clinic, and an administrator at a UN international school with students from 65 countries. Originally from Tokyo, I guide in Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Uji, where I combine historical knowledge with personal experience. I also offer tours in Tokyo and surrounding areas upon request. Japan is a beautiful country with a long history, tradition and rich cultural heritages, having various features in each of the four distinct seasons. Although there are now many visitors from abroad, mainly from Asian countries, they are mostly interested in shopping taking advantage of cheaper yen rather than understanding our people and culture. Kyoto and Nara are the two cities best known by foreign tourists, but not all the aspects of Japanese culture are concentrated there. If you visit the countryside other than these two cities, you will never fail to see the beautiful natural surroundings and people who will warmly welcome you. (Highlights) The Great Buddha of Nara is a magnificent structure weighing some 500 tons. Originally built in 752 AD, the stature is 15.9 meters high excluding the pedestal and its face 4.8 meters long. Subsequently, it was damaged by natural disasasters, fires and wars and was repaired several times. It was completely rebuilt in the Edo period (1603-1867). You will be amazed at the splendid image of the Great Buddha calmly seated on the pedestal with the look of a perfect repose and passionless calm. His right hand shows mercy and left hand, the wisdom of the universe. The building housing this huge image, The Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple, is the largest existing wooden structure in the world, having an area of 54 meters by 49 meters and a height of 45 meters. It was burned down by a fire twice, but was rebuilt in the Edo period. (How to enjoy) You will be amazed at how huge the Buddha image is. Immerse yourself in the solemn atmosphere it creates amid the odor of burning incense, wonder at the ancient technology and the wisdom and the devotion of people. After all, you will never end up not being deeply impressed with the aura the "Daibutsu-sama" Great Buddha emits. Everywhere around the Great Buddha Hall, in the meantime, you can enjoy mixing with tame deer which do you no harm but ask you for food, "shika-sembei", which is being sold at the nearby stalls for 150 yen a pack containing some 50 grams of the deer food. You will feel very happy feeding, stroking and hugging the cute animal whose number exceeds, perhaps, 100. (Others) The transportation fare between Kyoto and Nara on a Kintetsu train is 620 yen (plus 510 yen if you take a limited express train). The entrance fee to Todaiji temple is 600 yen.

“Nara y Osaka”

Osaka fue una parada de dos dias del crucero y Takashi hizo que aprovecharamos el tiempo al maximo, el primer dias nos movilizamos en un vans que alquilamos de Osaka a Kioto y visitamos todos los sitios mas relevantes, ir con Takashi nos permitió movilizarnos rápido, luego regresamos a Osaka y nos orientó en lo que debíamos hacer por nuestra cuenta. El segundo día nos recogió en la terminal y salimos juntos a Nara, recorrimos Nara y al medio día regresamos a Osaka para terminar de recorrer los sitios mas emblemáticos de Osaka y luego nos llevo a la terminal de cruceros. Takashi es una persona muy educada que nos fue explicando la historia en los diferentes sitios visitados, fue muy eficiente en el uso del tiempo y gracias a él, en el poco tiempo que tuvimos en Osaka, logramos conocer 3 ciudades. Habla perfectamente bien el español, fue un guia EXCELENTE!!

“Exploring Nara (day trip from Osaka)”

We had the most amazing day exploring Nara with Masahisa - or Mike, as he likes to be called. He met us at the Osaka port and was such a lovely, energetic guide who knows Nara inside out, having lived there for many years. We caught the local train from Osaka to Nara, and Mike expertly navigated us through the crowds to all the best spots in Nara Park - even stopping along the way at Nakatanidou for some freshly made mochi (a must-try!). It was a big day of walking, but Mike smartly suggested we take the local shuttle bus between a few of the temples and shrines to give our legs a rest. Feeding the friendly deer (with crackers provided by Mike) was definitely a highlight, as was visiting the serene Yoshikien Japanese Garden. Lunch at a traditional soba noodle restaurant was another memorable moment - simple, authentic, and delicious. Mike is such a kind and generous guide who genuinely loves meeting people from around the world. His passion for sharing Japan’s history and culture made the day extra special. We couldn’t recommend him more highly!

Lisa Thank you again for visiting us from afar. Although our time together was limited, I sincerely hope you were able to touch at least a glimpse of the atmosphere of the ancient capital, Nara. Your visit brought back memories of my time in Perth. I still vividly recall a photo I took back then at the Pinnacles, where the dazzling contrast between the white sandy beach and the deep navy sky remains striking, even as the photo itself has aged. I forgot to mention this during your visit, but unlike Fremantle Prison, Nara will soon be home to Japan’s first luxury hotel utilizing a former prison designated as an Important Cultural Property.
