Nijo-jo Castle has witnessed some of the most important events in Japanese history in the 400 years since it was built. The castle was completed in 1603 on the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder and first Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1867).
A temple of the Kenninji school of the Rinzai sect in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. The mountain name is Mt. Jubusan. The principal object of worship is Shaka Nyorai. The name of the temple is specifically Kodai Jushozenji Temple. The temple was built by Kita no Mandokoro, the lawful wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to pray for Hideyoshi's soul, and the name of the temple comes from Kodai-in, the name of the temple after Kita no Mandokoro's dedication (becoming a Buddhist monk). Along with being a Zen temple, it also has the character of a mausoleum dedicated to Hideyoshi and Kita no Mandokoro.
A temple of the Kenninji school of the Rinzai sect in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. The tower head of Kodaiji Temple. The principal object of worship is Shaka Nyorai. It is known that Kitanomandokoro, the lawful wife of Hideyoshi TOYOTOMI, used it as her home base in her later years, and it is also said to be the place of her demise. The three-faced Daikokuten in the collection is said to be Hideyoshi's nenjibutsu.
Kiyomizu-dera is a temple of the Hosso sect (one of the six sects of Nanto), and along with Koryu-ji and Kurama-dera, it is one of the few temples in Kyoto that has a history dating back to before the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyo. Along with Ishiyamadera (Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture) and Hasedera Temple (Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture), it is one of Japan's leading sacred Kannon sites.
The temple is called Ryuka Gusokuzan Myosenji Temple, and was the first temple of the Nichiren sect in Rakuchu, founded in 1321 in the late Kamakura period. It was built by Nichizo Shonin, who succeeded Nichiren Daishonin's will and became the imperial capital.
After Nichizo Shonin's tenacious missionary work, Emperor Godaigo gave the temple an imperial edict to propagate the Lotus Sutra.
The temple moved repeatedly, but after the Honnoji Incident, Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the temple to be moved to its current location, Ogawa Teranouchi, and the form of the temple today was established.
During the Edo period, most of the temple was destroyed by the Great Fire of Tenmei in 1788, but it was quickly rebuilt, and most of the current buildings were rebuilt at that time.
Since then, it has survived the Haibutsu Kishaku (a movement to abolish Buddhism) in the Meiji period and the chaotic period after the war, and has inherited the lantern to this day.
