Hakata Cultural Private Tour & The Sacred Giant
Step into the spiritual heart of Fukuoka on a journey that bridges the merchant traditions of Old Hakata with the mountain serenity of Sasaguri. Together we’ll trace a path through more than a thousand years of history, on foot and by private vehicle, far from the usual tourist rush.
Itinerary

Meeting Point
JR Hakata Station
- We’ll meet you at the JR Hakata Station Tourist Information Center. Arriving by cruise? We can also pick you up at the Hakata Cruise Terminal — just let us know when you book.
Jotenji Temple
We’ll begin at the historic gate of Jotenji. While the inner gardens are a quiet sanctuary, together we’ll discover the fascinating monuments here marking the birthplace of Japanese noodles and the spirit of the Hakata Yamakasa festival.
Tochoji Temple & The Sensory Walk
Next we’ll visit Tochoji, the oldest Shingon temple in Kyushu. We’ll marvel at its 10.8-meter wooden Great Buddha, then step into the “Crawl through Hell” — a spiritual trial in total darkness that leads, at last, toward the light of paradise.
Machiya Folk Museum & Kushida Shrine
We’ll explore a beautifully reconstructed Meiji-era merchant house at the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, then visit Kushida Shrine, home to the magnificent, permanently displayed festival float (kazari-yamakasa).
Lunch Stop at Kawabata Shopping Arcade (At a location of your choice)
We’ll stroll the 400-meter Kawabata Arcade, Hakata’s oldest shopping street, and pause for a local lunch — perhaps a steaming bowl of Hakata ramen or udon — amid the lively bustle of the market.
Nanzoin: Reclining Buddha
In the afternoon we’ll wander the mystical grounds of Nanzoin, following forest paths and tunnels to the vast 41-meter reclining Buddha. Together we’ll take a quiet moment to feel the serene energy of this remarkable sacred site.
Tour concludes
Our day together comes to a close as we drop you off at your hotel or another preferred spot in Fukuoka.

“Excellent and Unique Tour!”
We had an excellent tour from Kei! We really loved going to some of the sights and experiences outside of the major tourist areas in Oita - we had the opportunity to visit the Kuju flower park, cook onsen eggs in a rustic hot spring, and visit the Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi Bridge. Kei was very knowledgeable and customized the tour to what we were interested in. He even showed us a roadside rice polisher which we had heard about and thought was very cool, so he found one in Beppu and told us all about it! Kei was beyond welcoming and pleasant and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to go beyond the typical sights and experience true local knowledge.

“My Attack On Titan Dreams Came True!”
Because many of the iconic Attack on Titan sites in Hita are a bit far from each other I was so grateful to find an English-speaking Tour Guide, Kei, who took care of every detail of this tour! From taking us around to Oyama Dam, that Tree on the Hill, TWO dedicated museums, Isayama sensei yakisoba and Levi gelato, and even the local sites to closely watching the weather and being so mindful of all of our needs, these were the most special and memorable days of my life!!! Kei was super friendly and knowledgeable, and even played the Attack on Titan soundtrack in the car. My greatest dream came true finally making my pilgrimage to the hometown of Isayama sensei, the creator of Attack on Titan!!

Visit to NANZOIN Temple by car
The Shakyamuni Nirvana Statue at Nanzoin Temple. Completed in 1995, it measures 41 meters in length, 11 meters in height, and weighs 300 tons—making it one of the largest bronze reclining Buddha statues in the world. It also became well known when the temple’s chief priest won the top prize and bonus prizes in the Jumbo Lottery, with many saying it might have been a blessing from the statue. Surrounded by lush greenery, the serene expression of the Buddha watches over visitors in quiet peace.
