Tochoji temple
You can appreciate grand Hakata Buddha statue and five-storied pagoda in the ground.
Hakata folk museum
This museum showcases Hakata's lifestyles and cultures in the early 20th century.
Kushida shrine
It is a total gardian god of Hakata and it has long been beloved by local people.
Hakata doll painting experience
Hakata clay doll is one of Hakata's traditional artcrafts which has over 400 years of history. Please enjoy the painting experience and make it something special!
Nishijin, the residential and shopping district in the west of Fukuoka
10-minute subway ride from downtown will take you to a lively residential and shopping district, called Nishijin.
You would have local specialties for lunch(Soba, Ramen, or any other dishes are available upon your request) before strolling a long shopping street(about 1.5km) lined with various kinds of shops. This district is not shown in the guide book but is quite popular among local people as a lively residential area with easy access to Hakata and Tenjin.

“Five Stars is not Enough”
It is unfortunate that Chiyako cannot be rated higher than 5 stars! The tour of Fukuoka was exceptional and just the right combination of Japanese history and culture. The Tojochi temple tour and the visit to Kushida Shrine was very interesting. We saw the largest Buddha in Japan and visited the meditation room underneath. The Hakata Japanese folk museum was also very interesting. We enjoyed hearing about the floats created by each Fukuoka neighborhood. Hakata Doll painting was also fun and offered a nice break from walking on a pleasant but warm day. Lunch at a local ramen restaurant in the Nishijin section was delicious. A final walk in the Nishijin shopping district was very pleasant- Chiyako helped my wife find some special Japanese towels to take home for her sisters. The tour was just right for two 73 year olds and is one of our favorite memories of Japan. Chiyako gets 10 stars as a tour guide!
