Uji city in Kyoto offers a variety of temples and shrines. Among them, the Byodoin Temple designated as a part of the World Cultural Heritage site in Kyoto is the major attraction of Uji.
It's on the south bank of Uji river. After crossing the Uji Bridge, a sharp turn to the left leads to the temple. Phoenix hall houses the Amida Buddha made by the famous Buddhist sculptor Jocho. Atop the roof stands a pair of mythical Chinese phoenixes, "ho-o" symbolizing the peace of the world.
Cormorant fishing takes place in this river at night from mid-June to mid-August.
Uji is one of the two largest centers of tea plantations along with Shizuoka. Two types of tea are grown: sencha is a high quality green leaf tea and matcha is a powdered green tea used in the formal tea ceremonies.
You can experience the Japanese tea ceremony as well as learn how to make Uji tea and how to use the tea cups.
You can have kaiten-zushi (a conveyor belt sushi restaurant), or Japanese noodles such as udon or soba for lunch.
Manpuku-ji is the head Temple of the Obaku Zen sect, one of the three Zen sects. A particulary notable feature of the temple is the golden statue of Hotei God enshrined in the Ten-no den. The wood carving of a large fish hangs in front of the Saido diniing hall.
Why don't you visit Byodoin and experience a Japanese tea ceremony ?

We had an excellent day with HIDEo YOSHIda. From our wishes he planned a tour, took us around town and showed us different sights of Kyoto. He is very knowledgable in many different areas so we learned a lot about Japanese culture and history. We can warmly recommend a day with HIDEo YOSHIda.
Hello Brian. I'm very glad to receive your good review. Today we visited Japanese gardens such as moss garden in Saihoji, Sogenchi garden in Tenryuji and Ninomaru garden in Nijo Castle. They gave us peaceful and fresh atmosphere. I'm going to do my best on guide for many years to come. Thank you. Best HIDEo YOSHIda
He is so friendly and very knowledgeable about local history and japanese mythology. His itinerary was well preplanned. I would not have been able to explore all the places we did on my own. Thanks Hideo san!
