Good getaway from city! Takachiho is located in the northwest of Miyazaki. Although it takes more than 3.5 hours to get there from Fukuoka, it is worth visiting to see those beautiful sceneries. Takachiho has been known since ancient times as a sacred ground where the gods descended to earth. Let's visit some spiritual spots and feel the energy!

at Tenjin or Hakata bus terminal station
This shrine venerates the nearby site of the Amanoiwato "holy rock cave" where, according to Japan's oldest chronicles, the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself when she was angered by the violence of her brother.
This cave is known as a place where 8 millions gods and goddesses gathered to have an important meeting. Feel the spiritual atmosphere.
This is the most important Shinto shrine in the area.
The gorge was designated as National Scenic and Natural Monument for its spectacular view.
Enjoy the view of Takachiho. When it is clear, you can also see Mt.Aso in Kumamoto pref.
at Tenjin or Hakata bus terminal station
In this tour, we'll visit Takachiho from Fukuoka. It takes about 3 hours and 40 mins by bus from Fukuoka city. Once we arrive in Takachiho, we'll have lunch near the bus station. Then we'll hire a taxi and first go to Amanoiwato shrine, this shrine venerates the nearby site of the Amanoiwato or "holy rock cave" where, according to Japan's oldest chronicles, the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself when she was angered by the violence of her brother. Then, we will walk to Amanoyasukawara (big cave) where 8millions gods and goddesses gathered to have an important meeting. After the cave, we will visit Takachiho shrine which is the most important Shinto shrine in the area. After that, we will go to the Takachiho gorge. The Takachiho Gorge was designated as National Scenic and Natural Monument for its spectacular view. At the end, we'll visit Kunimigaoka observation deck, enjoy the beautiful view of Takachiho from there.
Finally we go back to the bus center and take a bus to Fukuoka city. We'll arrive at Fukuoka around 8:20pm.

★Fukuoka city ↔Takachiho by bus 7,330yen per person
Taxi fee in Takachiho 18,000 (maximum of 3 people) ☆If you are more than 3 people, you will need to hire a jumbo taxi. Please ask me for more details.
★It is very important to be present at Tenjin or Hakata bus terminal station on time (deperture time is 8:25am at Hakata and 8:05am at Tenjin bus terminal)
★Come with comfortable shoes.
★It is possible that sometimes they close the route to Amanoyasukawara (due to the heavy rain), and in that case you may not be able to visit the cave.
We enjoyed our Christmas Day in Fukuoka with Hitomi San. She took us to see the “happening” places in Fukuoka, made sure all the kids and seniors in our big group were comfortable. The pace was slow and easy for us as we requested. The children loved her and we all had a great time! She also helped us get tickets to a circus show in the New year. Hitomi San is highly recommended!

After meeting at the hotel where my daughter and I stayed in Fukuoka, all of us went to the station to go to Nagasaki. Right when we arrived in Nagasaki, Hitomi talked about Nagasaki and its history and a lot more information that we didn't know about before. She explained things clearly, had taught my daughter how to do origami and also taught her how to properly rinse and pray at the temple. She had also brought us to a great restaurant for lunch. I highly recommend Hitomi because of how informative she is and she also has great English.
