This tour explores the spiritual heart of rural Nara through two of Japan’s most atmospheric temples.

Surrounded by cedar forests and mountain landscapes, Murouji offers a rare glimpse into ancient mountain Buddhism and Shugendo practices, where women were historically allowed to worship.

In contrast, Hasedera represents deep devotion to Kannon (the Goddess of Mercy), featuring a magnificent wooden corridor and breathtaking seasonal flowers such as peonies and hydrangeas.

09:40 AM

Stroll through Murouji Temple Town

Before entering the temple, enjoy a short walk through the charming temple town.

You can try local snacks such as yomogi (mugwort) cakes, a regional specialty loved by locals.

10:00 AM

Visit Murouji Temple

Murouji is a sacred mountain temple known as “Women’s Koya,” where women were historically allowed to worship, unlike Mount Koya.

Nestled deep in the forest, the temple reflects the spiritual world of Shugendo (mountain asceticism).

Highlights include:

・The beautiful five-story pagoda, one of the smallest and oldest in Japan

・Moss-covered stone steps surrounded by cedar trees

・Seasonal flowers such as rhododendrons in spring

Your guide will explain the unique role of Murouji in Japanese religious history and its connection to esoteric Buddhism.

Optional Experiences (depending on your preference and pace):

・Oku-no-in (Inner Sanctuary) – approx. 1.5 hours round trip

A spiritual hike up more than 700 steep stone steps leading to the sacred inner sanctuary.

This path has been used by practitioners for centuries and offers a deeper understanding of mountain worship.

Note: Physically demanding with narrow and sometimes slippery paths.

・Murou Ryuketsu Shrine – approx. 45 minutes

A hidden sacred site dedicated to the Dragon God, representing ancient nature worship in Japan.

This site provides insight into pre-Buddhist beliefs and the spiritual connection between water, mountains, and deities.

Enjoy a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant.

You can try traditional dishes such as sansai (mountain vegetables), reflecting the region’s natural bounty.

About Tour Guide Naoto O.

Hello! My name is Naoto, and I am from Mie Prefecture.

I became a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter in 2026. While I am still building my experience as a professional guide, I completed a tourism guide training program organized by the Mie Prefectural Government in 2025. Through this program, I gained solid knowledge of Japanese history and culture, as well as practical skills in guiding and tour planning.

I spent my university years in Kyoto and also studied abroad in Canada and New Zealand. I have passed the EIKEN Grade 1 and scored 925 on the TOEIC. My academic background is in law and international relations, so I enjoy discussing global topics as well.

I specialize in guiding visitors in the Iga region, the birthplace of ninja, and the quiet historical areas of eastern Nara Prefecture. These places are not crowded with international tourists, but they offer a deeper understanding of Japan. Of course, I can also guide you to Ise Grand Shrine, one of the most sacred places in Japan.

Since public transportation is limited in these rural areas, we will travel comfortably by my car. If you are interested, I would also love to introduce you to local restaurants that serve fresh organic vegetables from this region.
