Kyoto East: Fushimi Inari, Tofukuji, Kiyomizudera, Sannenzaka, Yasaka Shrine, and Gion on Foot
A full day on Kyoto’s east side, planned so we never backtrack. Climb through thousands of vermilion torii at Fushimi Inari, cross Tofukuji’s maple valley on the Tsutenkyo bridge, and look out over the city from Kiyomizu-dera’s wooden stage. Then wander down the preserved Sannenzaka slopes into Gion, past machiya teahouses and the willow-lined Shirakawa canal, taste your way through Nishiki Market, and end in lantern-lit Pontocho.

Meeting Point
Your accomodation in Osaka.
- I’ll meet you at your accommodation and escort you by train to Fushimi Inari, our first stop. From central Osaka, the trip takes about an hour; from a Kyoto hotel, it’s shorter. The meeting time above is for an Osaka hotel and an 8:00 start at Fushimi Inari. I’ll confirm the exact time once I know where you’re staying. Early Start for Photographers: Want the torii gates in soft morning light, potentially before most visitors arrive? Choose the early start: we arrive at Fushimi Inari by 7:00, or 6:30 from November to early December, when Tofukuji opens earlier. From Osaka, that means meeting at about 6:00 (5:30 in November). I’ll show you the stretches and viewpoints that work best for photos. Please note: an early start means fewer visitors, but I can’t guarantee empty sites. Crowds depend on the season, day, and weather, and popular spots can be busy even early, especially in cherry blossom and autumn-leaf seasons and on weekends and holidays.
Fushimi Inari Taisha
Thousands of vermilion torii gates lead up to the Yotsutsuji viewpoint over the city.
Tofukuji
The Tsutenkyo bridge over a maple valley, and Zen rock gardens. A 20-minute walk from Fushimi Inari.
Keihan train to Kiyomizu-Gojo
Just two stops from Tofukuji Station, then walk up Gojozaka.
Kiyomizudera
The famous wooden stage with views across Kyoto. We'll reach there after a short Keihan train ride, then a walk up Gojozaka.
Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka
Preserved stone-paved slopes lined with traditional shops.
Lunch near Yasaka Pagoda
Your choices of Yuba, Yudofu, soba, or a set lunch in the Higashiyama lanes.
Nene-no-michi
Quiet stone path past Kodaiji's gate.
Maruyama Park & Yasaka Shrine
Flat stroll into Gion through the shrine grounds.
Hanamikoji & Shirakawa
Machiya streets of the geisha district and the willow-lined canal.
Nishiki Market
Cross the Kamo River; a tasting walk through Kyoto's kitchen.
Pontocho
Lantern-lit alley. Ends near Kawaramachi and Gion-Shijo stations.
Begin return trip to Osaka
If you opt for a dinner plan (please see details in Important Information), I’ll book a restaurant that suits your tastes, join you for the meal to share more about the food and culture, and escort you back to your accommodation afterward.
If you choose the no-dinner option, depending on where your accommodation is, I will escort you back via the best route home.

About Tour Guide Toshi T.
Hello! I’m Toshi, your local insider and itinerary planner in Kansai.
I’m new to GoWithGuide, but I’ve spent over 35 years helping people enjoy life’s most meaningful moments in beautiful places.
For decades, I was a destination wedding photographer in San Francisco. My clients came for the photos, but they remembered the whole experience: carefully planned journeys around historic City Hall and the city’s hidden viewpoints, with every detail handled so they could relax.
From 2016 to 2018, I led the Canon KelbyOne Worldwide Photowalk, guiding groups of up to 20 along scenic San Francisco routes to support the Spring of Hope Kenya Children’s Home.
Today, I bring that same warm hospitality, careful planning, and eye for beauty to Osaka, Kyoto, and all of Kansai.
Why travel with me?
A local’s eye for the special: I’ll take you beyond the landmarks to quiet side streets, the best viewpoints, and the everyday Japanese life most visitors walk past.
Smooth, stress-free days: After decades of managing tight schedules for international clients, I’ll handle the trains, the timing, and the details so your day feels relaxed.
Tailored to you: Family, couple, or solo, we’ll build the day around your interests and pace, whether that’s history, food, temples, or hidden neighborhoods.
A photographer’s instincts: I won’t run a photography lesson, but I always know where the light is best. I’m happy to point out a great spot or take your picture along the way.
Early start for photographers: Every tour offers an optional early start for the best morning light at the first stop, potentially before most visitors arrive: Fushimi Inari’s torii gates, Arashiyama’s bamboo grove, or Osaka Castle’s grounds before the tower opens at 9:00. I can’t guarantee empty sites, especially in peak seasons and on weekends and holidays.
Let’s skip the crowded, cookie-cutter routes and plan a day in Kansai that shows you Japan’s true soul. Send me a message, and let’s start planning!

You can experience the deep retro side of Osaka that you won't find in guidebooks or online! I'll take you on a tram to the largest shrine in the Kansai region. I'll also take you to a place where you can shop for knives and other traditional Japanese items! The highlight is a visit to a traditional Japanese izakaya. Tour of Osaka-jo Castle
(Highlights) The present castle building looks beautiful, powerful and in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment. However, it was the venue of hegemony, bloody conflicts and natural disasters for many centuries. Once you visit the castle, you will be amazed at the magnificent structures, huge moats and the beautiful natural environment. The view from the top of the eight-storied donjon is splendid. You can reach there either by going up the steep stairways or taking an elevator ride. The castle is in the heart and the landmark of Osaka city, where many modern buildings stand. (How to enjoy) You can enjoy a leisurely walk along the one-kilometer road leading to the castle after you get off the train and, once inside the precincts, you cannot spare even a moment without marveling at the sight of an ancient technology and human wisdom, as well as the huge rocks building up the protection walls. Not only seeing the buildings, you can also sit on the grass and enjoy having lunch with your family members or friends. (Others) The entrance fee is 600 yen per person and the JR Osaka Loop Line train fare is 300 yen for the ride from Osaka to Osaka-jo-koen station. The fare for the ride between Kyoto and Osaka, meanwhile, is 510 yen.
