One of highlights in Fukuoka is Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine dedicated to Tenjin-san, a god of learning. It's located in Dazaifu city, only 30-minute train ride from Fukuoka city. A deity of learning, Sugawara no Michizane who was a poet and politician back in the 9th century is enshrined in the place where he ended his life. He was originally from the family of scholars in Kyoto and had shown high academic talent. He was a devoted servant to the central government in Kyoto. However, due to the political conflict, he ended up being demoted to Dazaifu in Kyushu. The shirne was built by local people to comfort his spirit.
It's well-known as a god of learning along with Kitano Tenmangu in Kyoto, many students visit the shrine for their success especially in entrance exam season, on Februry. Furthermore Februry is the best season to visit there because 6,000 plum trees in 200 species bloom beautifully ahead of spring. I visited there yesterday, on 5 Februry and enjoyed plum blossoms viewing.
