Itinerary Ideas

When you visit Dazaifu area known for Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine as a god of wisdom, why don't you extend your visit to Kamado shrine? Dazaifu, a former regional government which ruled Kyusyu island in ancient times, is located in the southeast of Fukuoka prefecture. It's about 30 minutes by train from the downtown Tenjin.

Unlike Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine with lots of tourists, Kamado shrine is less crowded and a no-touristy spot.  It sits at the base of Mt. Homan, located in the inauspicious direction from Dazaifu.  Along with a shrine standing on top of it, Kamado shrine was established to protect against demons.  The shrine is dedicated to the prince Tamayorihime from Japanese mithology, well-known as a god of love and matchmaking. When I visit there, many girls and women made a visit to ask for a good match. It has more than 1000-year history back in old days, and it's filled with fresh and crisp air I can feel from the mountain on the back.

What is more, it is popular for its newly rebuilt shrine office in the modern and stylish design. ( I feel the inside was like Apple Store.) They sell a wide variety of charms and amulets displayed beautifully. You can find your favorite depending on your puropose. The god takes care of matchmaking from marriage, friends to business.

The shrine is famous for a cherry blossoms viewing spot. From the late March to early April, cherry blossoms festival will be held and the place will be illuminated at night. I'm sure it's definitely the must-see spot in spring!!

Transportation: a community bus runs from Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station to Kamado Shrine every 30 minutes. It takes about 15 minutes by bus and 40 minutes on foot from Dazaifu Station.
