Welcome to Kanmon! This is a tour to walk along Kanmon Strait and visit Highlights like Mojiko Retro area include Japan Heritage sites, Mekari Shrine, Pederstrian Tunnel to cross the prefecture border, Akama Shrine, and Karato Market. We take about 2.5hours to walk from Mojiko Retro to Karato (Shimonoseki side) and a ferry to back to Mojiko at the end. We can also take public transportation if you prefer. Ferry ticket included, No Lunch.

Meeting Point

Mojiko Station

- Meet at the oldest Station in Japan. I will wait at the entrance with the board of "Walk around Kanmon" or your name. We reconfirm the itinerary and rearrange it if we need. Take at time to see Mojiko Station and Mitsui Club where Einstein stayed when he came to Japan in 1923.

Mekari Shrine

The most Northest shrine on Kyushu Island and one of the older shrine has existed from the 3rd Century.

Pedestrian Tunnel

Cross the strait to Honshu side (Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi). It 780m (abot 1/2 mile). There is a prefecture border of Fukuoka and Yamaguchi.

Akama Shrine

Symbol shrine of Shimonseki. Enshrine the 51st Emperor Antoku, who had died at the age of 8.

Karato Market

Most popular spot in the area. Whole sale fish market. Find many fresh sushi and fried seafood for the weekend.

I am Rie. I have been a guide for 3 years, a wine bar owner, and a horn player etc. I had lived in US, Guam and Switzerland and have been living in Shimonoseki since 2017. I love traveling, drinking and eating local foods, photographying, and meeting people and more! I started taking a lesson of Japanese Traditional dance because I am into Kabuki Theatre and Kimono. City Shimonoseki is very unique and still a hidden place in Japan from my perspective. Pedestrian tunnel under Kanmon strait was picked on the TV program "Great Railway Journey" by BBC in 2026, and I was a part of the program for 30 sec :) It is my pleasure to show you around and make your visit personal and memorable!!
